Denied for a mistake made by the University

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Two days ago I received notice that I was denied admission to my dream nursing program. I have worked very hard for the past two years and have a 3.71 gpa, 100+ volunteer hours at a hospital and an 86 on my TEAS. I was completely heartbroken for the past two days, but today I decided to try harder to get in next year. So I called the BSN program I applied to to see what I can do to better myself. As the woman on the phone began to review my application she told me I was missing a biology class. This was a biology class that I had taken in fall 2011 and received an A in. This class is on my transcript! However, somewhere along the line it was said I did not have this class and I was denied. I was not even notified by anyone that they had a class missing and now it is too late. The lady on the phone made it seem like I could have gotten in this year! I am so upset and frustrated that someone could be so careless and cost me admission to my dream school! Has anyone had a similar story? Is there anything I can do about it?

Hey everyone! Thanks again for all the advice! After not hearing from the university last week I feared the worst, but today I received a call stating someone denied their admissions and the spot was mine if I wanted it!!! They said they felt so bad for what happened they put me right at the top of a wait list. I'm so excited to start the program!!

Awesome!! Congratulations! I am so happy that it worked out for you!!

Well they should feel really bad! A lot if nursing programs dont play by the books. This is a case where you caught them red handed. Glad you got in!!! I know two friends who had all their classes done. Took their TEAS on the same day. One friend had a lower point total then the other friend and guess who got in?! The friend with the lower point total. The one with the higher point total didnt get in. Now you tell me how that works?! I would have been questioning that....

It's possible that the school looked at other criteria like the essays, recommendations, volunteering, experience in the medical field or any combination of the above.

No because our school doesnt do any of that. It is strictly based off your TEAS and your pre-req grades.

Specializes in Oncology/hematology.

Congratulations! But, they didn't do you a favor, you earned that spot! Now, show them what you're made of! :)

Specializes in Med-Surg, Telemetry, ER.

Congrats!! Similar thing happened to me-- I was denied to a school because of a typo (someone at the university typed in my ACT score wrong). When I called to find out why I was denied, they looked at my records and couldn't apologize enough. I completely disagree with the person who said "a lot of nursing schools don't play by the books,..." We all make mistakes. And just because we might not agree or understand a university's decision doesn't mean the university is underhanded. I am glad you spoke up. Too many people would have just let it go. Good for you!!

Congratulations! I am so happy this all worked out for you.
