College Algebra

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Is anyone else taking college algebra (MATH 136) over the summer? I have to take it before I can start my ASN program (of which I am still waiting acceptance to). As I have looked through the textbook, I am getting more and more freaked out.

It doesn't help that I have people telling me how hard it is and how many people drop the course due to the difficulty. Anyone else in the same boat and wanting to become online study buddies?

If it helps, I'm taking it through Ivy Tech.

My mantra is always is not difficult its just that I don't know how to do it yet.

Get a problem book ( I love the enormous book of algebra problems) and just do a bunch. You learn math by doing math

I'll be in an accelerated class this July. I did take a non-credit course this past Spring to help me remember (I'm 32!) and hopefully that will help. Math is my weakest subject :)

Hi Everybody, sorry for barging into the conversation. I'm not a nurse, but I am a math professor. If anyone ever has a question regarding one of these algebra or statistics course, feel free to drop me a message.

I know it can be tough taking math after having been out of school for a while or during the summer when the pace is much quicker, so I'd just like to help out when I can.

John

I agree with ImKosher! I took College Algebra last summer and came out with a C because i hadn't take a math class in almost 8 years and was completely lost. My friend took the same class and used Mymathlab and made an A. I plan on retaking it to try to better my grade. I'm not good in math at all but I'm determined.

I didn't have to take any of the remedial classes because I have a previous college degree. When looking through the book, I noticed it's similar to the Algebra 2 stuff my daughter is doing in high school.

I'm hoping that once I am in lecture the stuff that is scaring me will be a piece of cake. I'm hoping my knowledge of basic algebra will help me succeed in this class! I have a feeling though that that may not be the case.

i heard 135 was easier.. try that class..i thinkg you have a choice of 135/136

The campus I attend doesn't offer 135, and I don't want to take a math class online.

I am crying out for your help, John!

Thanks,

I enter my nursing program in the fall and just finished Algebra this last semester. I felt very much the same as you do and I learned a few things that got me through and helped me pass with a B. Def work hard. Do all of your homework and do not ever miss a class. Get yourself a tutor right away and meet at the least once a week for a few hours if not more than once a week. Realize that it might not come as easily to you as some other subjects but the good thing about it is there is always a right answer and method. I practiced everything over and over and over. I took practice tests and found repetition was the key for me to get it into my head. Also try to think about it differently as in it can be fun and interesting. Its a little like doing puzzles and of course it is problem solving. So relax and try to find something you enjoy about it.

Borrow "Algebra for Dummies" from your library and review before the course starts. Will give you a great overview.

Then just attend the classes and do the homework. If you hit a difficult concept plug through until you understand it. If you need tutoring help, then get it.

You can totally do algebra and will need it for chemistry and pharm classes.

You might also check the website ratemyprofessor.com It might be wise to see which teacher has the better comments and which ones to stay away from at the particular college you're attending.

College Algebra moves at a very fast pace in a summer session. Be prepared to study lots and do your homework diligently. I agree with a few other posters, practice, practice, practice. I wish you the best and hope that you have an awesome instructor. A good instructor makes a huge difference. Also, if you have tutors availabe to you through your school, get with them early and often for help. :twocents: ::just my two cents::
