Becoming obsessive about my grades

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

WARNING: VENTING lol

Up until now, I haven't taken any of my science pre-reqs for my nursing program. I have everything else done, and have a 4.0 (in nursing pre-reqs, I got a B in chemistry and health and wellness )

Winter term starts in 10 days and I'm so nervous. I'm taking A&P1, Genetics, and nutrition. The girls in my CNA class this fall who already took these have me so freaked out about the difficulty. One of the girls is taking A&P1 for the third time because she hasn't been able to pass it. I've started reading my text book just so I can have a jump start on everything. My nutrition class is online and the teacher published it early and I've already made 35 flashcards and done the learning objectives for the first module. I'M SUPPOSED TO BE ON BREAK AND I'M LETTING THIS CONSUME ME.

I'm in the mindset where I have to get an A. My school's nursing program is so competitive and I feel like if my application isn't PERFECT, I won't get in. I was the type of person who just slid by in high school with B's without an ounce of effort, so this feeling and behavior is not typical of me. I've never been big on studying, and I've always been a bare minimum kind of student. Am I freaking out because I'm putting everything I have into just one goal at one school? I know a few people who are applying to multiple places, but I really don't have the luxury of moving across the state right now.

Is anyone else crazy obsessive about grades?

I took A&P I & II, and I passed both classes with an A. I really enjoyed those classes. It's not the kind of class where you can slide through without effort. You have to take the time to study and really understand it. In my school, I had to take A&P lecture and an A&P lab class. Having both those classes and with the same teacher was really great because it reinforces your knowledge. I also watched youtube videos and my favorite to watch were by crash course. I definitely recommend watching crash course anatomy and physiology videos. They are only 10 minutes long and I would watch them after each class. There was also a study room specifically for A&P students and I would go in there throughout the semester to study. They would have models out, so you could identify things and they had microscopes and a teacher there as well if you had any questions. I did not take those classes with the mindset of, "I just want to get through these classes to get into nursing school." These classes are the foundation you need to become a great nurse. Don't let these classes overwhelm you! Enjoy the ride. I took 5 classes last semester and I work full time overnight and I got all A's. I will not lie, it was a bit stressful and I had to give up going out at times so I could study, but it's possible. You have to be willing to put the work in and use the resources that are given to you by your school. I am only applying to one nursing school as well, so I know that can be stressful as well. Just breathe! You will be fine.

Just breathe! You will be fine.

Thanks girl! A part of my anxiety I guess is how much time I've already wasted in school because I had no direction. Now that I have a direction I want to GO GO GO.

I'm definitely excited to learn A&P, I guess I'm just anxious to start :)

Good luck in your application!!

I understand how you feel! When I first went to college, I majored in something completely different, then life happened. It took a few years, but I was finally able to go back to school and do what I have wanted to do for a long time. This coming semester may be a little stressful, but I am sure you will do great!
