Bad professor?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

My professor for my Organic Chem class has some horrible reviews on ratemyprofessor.com. Unfortunately, she is the only teacher available to teach Orgo, so I have no other options but to take her.

The reviews states that she is hard to understand because she has a really low voice and a profound accent. Plus, the reviews say it's a pass/fail class and that she's never consistent on what she's teaching...

I really need this class to apply to this nursing program in December, so there's no dropping the course. Plus, this is Orgo and I'm taking it before Gen Chem because I heard the two doesn't corelate with one another, so I would just be wasting time and money.

Did anyone else pass a class with a bad professor?

Can you take this class at a different college?

I wish... I go to a university. :(

I would still look if there are universities or colleges around you offer that class.

How old are the reviews? If they are several years old she may have changed her teaching style and/or tests since then. Also, just because she has bad reviews on RMP doesn't mean she is a bad teacher. My A&P teacher had pretty bad reviews saying how hard the class was, how her accent was thick, and how she spent most of the class talking about her life. She was great, the tests were fair, and I made an A in her A&P I and II pretty easily. This has happened to me several times with RMP. I wouldn't freak out over bad reviews.

Also, I've taken O Chem, and I think you'll be fine without Gen Chem I or II. They really are very different.

I know a phenomenally talented math professor who has the lowest rating on that cite, the reasons being her accent, her serious attitude to learning and that "she cannot make lessons fun". Lessons of calculus, mind you, and for people who are kinda expected to know it, for they are going to become civil engineers one day.

You will meet incredible number of "bad" administrators, managers, colleagues and even new relatives in your life, and you will come to avoud some of them and cherish every moment spent with some others. I bet there will be more of the latter ones but you wob't find out till you try. Go take the course and do your best and forget about ratemyprofessor.com as a reliable source of information. It is another outcrop of online whining industry, the analogue of pissedconsumer.com, an endless source of fun for me. I find reading of stupid expressions of how one's whole life was totally ruined because his high majesty was not properly greeted upon entering some God-forsaken fast food place and his fries were cold and not crispy enough relaxing for some strange reason.

I dislike websites like Rate My Professor” Let me guess, all reviews were bad? For how long do the reviews go back? Take the average number of students per the professor's course and divide it by the total responses on the site- what percentage did you get? Of course this method isn't close to being perfect, but I would suspect it would perhaps give you a little more insight. There are so many learning resources on the internet that if someone does not understand the professor, he or she can seek out the same information presented differently, either by a different person or with the presenter utilizing a different teaching method.

I do my best to incorporate multiple learning methodologies when teaching my courses. However, it always seems that during evaluation time, there are always one or two students who think I was the most awful professor. I make my students work. My job is to facilitate information- it's your job to learn. So, if one method does not work, listening to a professor lecture for example, try another. I am always surprised by the number of students who think lecture is the only activity needed to learn information. There is way too much information to cover in a sitting, especially when I am trying to cover anywhere between 15 to 20 chapters before the next exam.

The organic course may be good for you, particularly if you need to seek outside resources. You will be expected to do it during your nursing program.

Good luck!

I always take internet reviews with a grain of salt- people are much more likely to take the effort to complain than they are to compliment.

I don't think you can always go by ratemyprofessor reviews. Sometimes the bad comments are from people that are pissed off because they failed the class and want to place blame on the teacher.

I always look up the professors on that website. Honestly, I've taken some professors that had horrible ratings and they ended up being awesome teachers. The complete opposite of what people thought of them.

You should talk to people you know that have previously taken this teacher before.

I had a professor for my first year bio class that was new to teaching and did speak english well. For that class, given his situation, my college bought extra learning materials to make it a little easier on students and him. For example, my college was not fond of buying class presentations, but for him they would make an exception and they also had other people from the science department to come and teach us lessons that he would have trouble pronouncing or explaining. Maybe your college would be willing to do something like that if you inquired about it?
