Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

ok, so I've been indecisive for quite some time now over what i'm going to do with my education. At 31 I'm finally finishing my associates degree in general studies. But I'm still being called to nursing. The community college in my area has a really bad schedule for pre-reqs and their nursing program is geared towards people who can go to school during the day, which is not the case for me. I need to work to help support my family financially and my hubby and daughter are on my health plan (hubby is self employed and a type 1 diabetic so he's not getting health insurance on his own any time soon).

I found another cc that has great schedule for pre-reqs and the nursing program is part-time. Clincals are even offered on Sundays!! The only thing is for me this school is out of state and the tuition is close to 400/credit. Is this crazy or should I just go for it. Hubby and I are trying to save for a house but with our current salaries this is not really happening. On the one hand I feel very guilty for spending any money at all on classes but on the other hand I know what I'm doing could mean good things for my family. But what do you all think??

Thanks...I look forward to an input you can give...

Prereqs - definitely look at community colleges in state first and don't limit yourself to your local campus. If you need to put together a schedule of courses that fits with your work and other responsibilities you often need to look at other community college campuses in your state system. Sometimes it takes signing up for classes at 2 or 3 different campuses to get the schedule you want.

Nursing school: 400/credit is steep. Unless you and your family can afford it, or you can get a nice scholarship or tuition waiver, I wouldn't do it. If you research your options closer to home - you should be able to find something more affordable and maybe more convenient for you. The best place to find out out what's available in your state is by going to your state board of nursing.

have you seen if you qualify for any awards at this school you are thinking about? i would say that should be your first step. send your fafsa info to them and see what happens. never hurts to try!

also, does your local cc have online classes? would you be willing to try that?

sorry i can't be more help :(

good luck to you:heartbeat
