applying for nursing school

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have 30 years experience in another field. How is looked upon when applying for nursing school. I have been in teaching. I plan to do two additional years so that I can hopefully, take the pre-requisites in night school and then, leave to take the remaining classes if I need any, take the required test and then, apply.

Although I live in an area that has 3 nursing programs within an hour's drive I am hopeful, that I get into UTA with the online program. Besides having a Bachelors I also have a Masters in a different field. I wonder how they will look at that. During the time that I will be in nursing school I will have a minimal income so I hope that I do not need to apply for financial assistance. I do not recall having filled out the FAFSA on my first run in school. I never have received financial aide except for scholarships for being on Dean's List. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

You might consider doing an accelerated program once you finish your prereqs since you have prior degrees. To do an online program you have to already be an RN. There is no online RN program. Only BSN and MSN. Your previous degrees aren't that important honestly except in that you could possibly do an accelerated program if one exists in your area. It is to your advantage to apply for FAFSA. Whether or not you qualify is questionable but you'd definitely want to check. It seems like you might want to meet with advisors from the school you're interested in.

UT Arlington's online AP BSN program will consider your prior degree. I'm currently a AP BSN student there; however, I'm in Houston. I work full-time Monday - Friday and complete the lecture work online. Clinical is at a local hospital on Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. and exam day is on Wednesday.

Additional considerations are given for the following:

1. Twelve (12) or more lower-division natural sciences taken at UTA;

2. Thirty or more lower-division prerequisite credit hours earned at UTA; and

3. Previous baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral degree earned in the U.S.
