Advise on Biology Courses, please! Returning to school after 10 years!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi again everyone,

Wow, I hope the admins don't start charging me, I've been quite the chatter box since I signed on.

Anyway, I found out I only need a handful of classes to actually apply to the ADN program at North Harris! I was sort of floored. I wasn't ready for that at all. I was looking at a BSN degree plan from Prairie View A&M and was thinking of taking English II and History this semester. I have not been in school in 10 years! I'm completely switching careers. My quesiton to you is, would you advise in taking a regular ole biology course as a 'refresher' or just jump right into Anatomy & Physiology I? Has anyone else been in this situation? I know under the class description it recommends it, but I spoke to a nursing advisor and she never mentioned it.

Thanks so much for all your time. :)

HI,

I am new to the bored and also school after 10 years! I start at Georgia Perimeter College on May 18th for pre-nursing. School is scary, period and sometimes it can be overwhelming. You have to base it on what you think your capabilities are. A&P is pretty hard but they do divide it up into two seperate courses. Taking a biology course will only hinder your graduation date. Go ahead with A&P, it is not as bad as you think. I work in an OR so i already know someone of the stuff. Watching TLC trauma in the ER or their other shows gives good information also.

Hi Carmeceia911!

Thanks to this website (and it's handy search feature), I've signed up for A & P I. I found some links in reference to the class and found some resources. I've already ordered study materials and will get the books ASAP. I have alot of idle time at work, I can use it reading. :)

My husband graduated with honors in engineering, he said the key is repetition, repetition, repetition and always do more than assigned.

Good luck. :)

I first took general Bio in 97 and nothing since. Then last fall semester I went right into A&P and got an A in lecture. I took the lab this spring and also got an A. I start A&P II this summer. I studied my butt off though.

I really suggest finding a way to study that works best for you. Like the above poster I also suggest repetition. Personally for me, writing and rewriting my notes helped. I also wrote note cards and made up my own possible exam questions in my note cards. Then I would quiz myself. For learning the cells, bones and muscles I did google searches for "images" and studied those pictures. This was especially helpful for the cells because there are lots of pictures of great slides on the web. I did the same thing for the bones.

I also would keep writing and reviewing my notes until I could almost write my notes without copying. It worked for me. I know some people that read over their notes again and again, but that never worked for me. For some reason writing it helped me memorize everything more easily.

I just finished A&P 1 and 2 after being out of school for 13 years. I got an A in both :) I think that being older and having life experience has really helped me in my schooling so far! Good luck to you!

Specializes in Neuro, Critical Care.

Bio is good dont get me wrong but I think that you could go right into AP and do fine, its pretty self contained, ie it doesnt rely on other courses and whatnot...ie like in some chem classes you really need the math to understand it...I got an A in ap1 and hadnt taken bio in awhile JMO..i didnt utuilze much of my old bio info...
