A&P - Overwhelmed by neural tissue

Please tell me I'm not the only one who is completely overwhelmed by neural tissue. I'm doing really well in A&P, but suddenly I'm so stressed out I can't take it. We just finished muscle tissue and are starting neural tissue (and learning all the muscles in lab at the same time).

Is it normal for me to be this stressed out? I work full time and am married with two small children. And I worry, if it's this hard now, what will nursing school be like (of course, I'll be a full time student then)? I'm exhausted and I just need someone to tell me it's normal!

Don't worry, I've felt completely overwhelmed at times and I don't have kids but have everything in common with you. It's tough material. My professor told me that if we weren't kind of intimidated by the nervous system, he'd be impressed.

I was totally stressed out during my prereqs. I think it's pretty normal! :) And yes, nursing school is even MORE intense. There will be some stuff that comes easy, but most of it will take some work.

The nervous system is definitely one of the more difficult systems in my opinion. During my anatomy class is was the system that I got my lowest grade on for the lecture part of the exam. We just tested on it earlier this week in my physiology class, and while there where still some sections that gave some difficulty, I do feel I did better this time around, will see tomorrow when grades get posted. Some of the information it will take more time for it to sink in and make sense, while other sections will not give you as much trouble or anxiety over. Try to understand and absorb as much as you can and know that as you go on it will start to click better over time.

I think that, of all the systems, the nervous system proved to be the most challenging. I still did pretty good on it, but when compared to the other systems in A&P 1 and 2, it took the most time to really get down. In A&P 2, the reproductive system was the more difficult, but the other systems were really interesting and fun to learn about.

Yup, what you're going through is totally normal. Like previous posters, I found the nervous system to be the most difficult to learn. I also found that I was a lot more stressed out during my prereqs because of the pressure to get A's to assure a spot in the program. Now that I'm in it, I'm ecstatic just to be passing. The content in nursing school definitely isn't easier, but I've let go of wanting perfect grades and that has helped my stress levels a lot. Hang in there!

Yes! There's only one nursing school in my area and it's supposed to be very competitive. I've read that if you don't have all A's in your prereqs you can't get in. Most of the people in my class seem to be thrilled if they're earning B's, but I'm desperate to get an A and it almost seems impossible!

Thank you all for your comments. I know nursing school will be hard, but I'm praying that once I'm in I can concentrate on actual learning, not just making perfect grades (which I know isn't even possible).

I am in A&P and sometimes I want to cry. I'm on the same chapter , we have a test on Saturday and I really don't know how I'm gonna pass. I have to study like 400 notes :(

I'm with you. The sheer amount of vocabulary is daunting. I just keep hoping if I focus on the big picture, the little pieces will make more sense. :)

I have a coworker in nursing school and he said that it's a little different in nursing school. It's difficult but prereqs are more stressful in the sense that you are just trying to get in. I hope I phrased that right... I totally realize nursing school is very difficult.

Nursing education is based upon a cumulative curriculum.... you really need to master each 'level' of information in order to succeed in the next step. A&P is the basis for everything!!! It's challenging, but if was easy, anyone could be a nurse... LOL.

Despite its bad reputation, Neuro is actually my fave system. It is so exact - unlike the ambiguity that can be associated with other systems like endocrine. Once you know how we're wired, it's pretty easy to figure out where the problem is. Conversely, when there is a problem, the diagnostic process is much clearer.
