33 and applying to become a nurse advice please

Hi! I'm Nes and I'm 33. I've been a CMA for the Past 10 years with a great group. I've learned a whole lot while Medical Assisting but I'm so ready to move on to becoming an RN.

I spoke with Chamberlain College of nursing and currently study for the HESI. It's been such a long time since I've been in school so I'm for sure going to have to refresh on some certain subjects. I'm a little nervous about getting in. My HS GPA from years ago wasn't that great and my college credits from years ago won't transfer because they're out of date. so I'm not sure if I will be accepted, hope so! Any advice for a gal with my situation?

Get your feet wet at your local community college and save money. Take their assessment tests and start in your tested level in the general ed classes (English, math) needed for a degree. Get the general ed classes out of the way first and you won't have to worry about them again, ever. Save the hard core science prerequisites until later after you have the hang of studying again and to save yourself time in the long run. You might find that you miss having to repeat science classes due to them aging out before you get a chance to be accepted into a nursing program.

I turned 30 this year! still doing pre-reqs.. started in spring 2015 and got all my general education courses done! now I am left with my three core science courses.. AP1 & 2 and Mircobio. Go ahead start getting your general courses done first.. time will fly you will be finished with pre-reqs before you know it!

At the risk of sounding like the resident allnurses site killjoy, I couldn't agree more with caliotter3.

The community college route is the way to go at a fraction of the cost of the for-profit Chamberlain (DeVry).

Community Colleges are places where students can go to reacquaint themselves with the academic world. You can take your prerequisites there, one at a time, on your schedule and without having to hock the rest of your life with life destroying loans.

Self finance as much of school as you can so when you graduate ALL your earning will stay right where they belong, WITH YOU.
