2012-2013 HRSA Nursing Scholarship Application

The application process hasn't even started yet but I didn't even find out about last year's scholarship until a couple days before the deadline. I did get my application in on time but was not fortunate enough to be a recipient. I intend to apply again for the upcoming scholarship. Any tips from those that were accepted? My EFC is 0, I'm in an undergraduate program, and my GPA is 3.4.

I got an alert due to an inquiry on my Experian credit report from CBC/DHHS/BPHC on the 16th, and an alert on my Equifax report from CBCINNOVIS on the 17th; anyone else?

Hmmm, I wonder if I should sign up for a credit report from one of those free sites.

I found out about the alerts because I am real anal about my credit and have one site truecredit.com that I pay $7.95 for a month and two I use that are free. Credit Karma and freecreditscore.com are good. I would strongly recommend truecredit.com from Transunion. It shows all alerts and inquiries from all three credit bureaus, lets you refresh your report everyday and is very detailed. It's worth the $7.95 a month.

I just check my credit, there is an inquiry from CBC/DHHS/BPHC on July 16th as well...keeping all fingers crossed

same here. I am praying so hard. Mine is dated July 17th.

How do you check for free?

First 30 days are free, thereafter $16.95 monthly. Thus far I am impressed, you get access to all 3 reports and credit scores.

I had two checks as well. Fingers crossed!

@itrust thanks for the site to sign up for the 30 trial, I signed up and mine too has been checked by the two names listed previously in a comment... I'm wondering why you guys are a little exited... Does it mean anything? Did every applicant not get theirs checked? ... I don't know I'm going crazy, I know I shouldn't be but honestly I am... Just finished reading last years thrwead which I must say only added to my craziness. Does anyone know of any current FB groups? Just trying to add to my crazy status lol wishing everyone the best of luck, I mean let's take a moment qnd be proud, I know I sacrificed a couple of .somethings on my GPA just applying for the NSP and I'm sure I'm not the only one, so congrats to all for simply applying. (Don't know if it means much coming from the crazy one :))

It is best to remain calm throughout this process and patience is key! :) But it is often hard to not have it running through your mind and everyone can relate to you in that way.

To answer your question: Based on previous cycles, it is believed to be a good sign to receive a credit check, but there has been no validated correlation between a credit check and being awarded as individuals have had their credit checked, but not been a recipient. If anything, feel optimistic to know they are at least looking into your application and file a little more!

I can't speak for everyone else, but I am more excited that there was an "update," albeit elusive, more than anything else. From last year's posts, it seems that no activity on the part of HRSA should be considered a guarantee to the scholarship. Secondly, unless the process is different, every applicant's credit report is not pulled. An applicant from last year's cycle summed up the answers to your concerns below:

Regarding credit checks:

I called this morning and spoke to someone who seemed knowledgeable about it. She said credit checks are a normal part of the process, and that it is an indicator of a more likely chance of getting it (it means they "like" your application and are moving on to the next step with it). However, they pull more credit reports than the end up giving out scholarships, so a credit check is NOT a guarantee of getting the award.

She also said that they are still processing applications. Credit checks are part of the application process, so they are definitely not finished - in other words, just because your credit hasn't been pulled, doesn't mean it won't be.

Furthermore, she said they sometimes make last-minute decisions on people who they never checked credit for. Though rare, it means that you can still receive the award even if your credit hasn't been checked.

Finally, the credit check is ONLY to ensure you have never defaulted on a federal loan OR a prior service obligation. Doing either of this things will disqualify you from the scholarship, so they have to make sure you haven't, as both would show up on your credit report. They do not look at credit score, debt, etc - they don't care about that. They are just checking to see about those two things.

Hope that clears some stuff up. Good luck to all of us! :) "

As I stated in my original post, I was notified about the alert through my credit monitoring agency. After seeing the alert I started to investigate what it was and where it was from. I learned through a Google search and a phone call that it seems to be good that your credit is being checked. From previous years there seem to be several rounds to the process and checking your credit for defaults is part of one of the rounds. That is not to say that if your credit was checked that you are a shoe in for the scholarship. It just means you are still in it. Also it seems that they check credit at different times. So just because it has not been checked yet doesn't mean it won't be. All a little confusing, but this has been the first sign that the process is moving along. From what I have read this might be the only sign we get until decisions are made and notifications go out.
