Np pay related to years as an RN

I've noticed that where I work, the minimum starting pay for an Np is about $5 more an hour than what I make with 4 yrs of being an RN with my BSN and a speciality certification. My question is, would a graduate NP make the minimum or does nursing experience count? Obviously, a veteren nurse would make a lot more than a new NP if that were the case ( and the FNP presumably works more hours).

Any thoughts/experiences?

Depends on the employer and the union. I have some colleagues that were veteran RNs before becoming NPs and because the hospital and union consider them "nursing" they start at the step of their experience as an RN; this is fairly atypical though and actually makes it hard to get a novice BP job as it is a far bigger financial commitment.

Most primary care NP salaries are not affected by years of RN experience.

I worked with an NP that said they were credited 1/2 year for every RN year on the salary steps. I have worked with others that were at the bottom as new grads. Will be Interested to hear from others too.

Makes you wonder why you would want to go to all of the extra expense and have all of the extra responsibility if you are not going to be compensated for the breadth/length of your experience along with the new additional knowledge gained in the pursuit and achievement of an NP. Makes me think the Doctoral programs are a waste of time too. Compensation does not seem to keep up with education and the costs expended to expand your nursing knowledge.

There are two sides to the coin. Years of experience as an RN who is a newly minted NP matter in the greater scheme of things due to the nature of the degree, but how much experience does that new NP have working as an NP?

Speaking from personal experience, your years of experience play a role in the hiring process, but I wouldn't say they make that much of an impact in regards to pay scale.

And as some have mentioned before, the potential employer has the final say on how years of RN experience are used in calculation of starting salary.

This topic always piques my interest.

I have no union experience but my 14 yrs as a nurse counted in my negotiations.

I think most NPs would agree that the average salary and the ceiling salary is much higher for NPs.

I work Monday through Thursday from 8-4 and I am looking at about $180k this year in salary; more importantly I love my job, I make my own schedule, and the role is much more satisfactory for me.

If it is ok, may I know how many years experience do you have?

I also try to find out what is the starting salary for FNP.

Salary will vary widely based on your locale; cost of living, access to care, NP scope of practice in your state will all significantly alter salary.

I have been practicing as an NP now for three years.
