No trauma or large hospital experience, what are my chances?

Hello All,

I have been reading all of the posts in the Pre-CRNA and some make me anxious while others are supportive. I would like to know what my chances of being accepted to anesthesia school are. I am applying to 's CRNA program this March (2014) hoping to start in January 2016. I currently work in an ICU/CCU at a community hospital. It is not a trauma center but we still get some sick patients. The type of patients we have are: stroke, MI, cardiac arrest and we do hypothermia protocol, post-surgical (ortho and GI), DKA/HHNS, and lost of pneumonia with sepsis and ARDS. We have the regular ICU stuff - vents, drips, A-lines, CVP, however, no SWANs. I know that it would be better if I worked at a Level One Trauma Center or large teaching facility. I have done enough research into this to understand that it's better but I love my unit, my co-workers, and my manager and I would like to stay in my unit. However, I am determined to be a CRNA so if I will know that I have no chance to get in with this ICU experience I will, reluctantly, switch jobs.

My other stats: I graduated with a BSN from the school that I'm applying to CRNA program ( I don't know if this makes a difference) with a 3.3. My first two years I was not a nursing major and I didn't do so well. However, as a nursing major I pretty much had a 3.5-4.0 each semester. In the end, the most I could raise my GPA was a 3.3 and I'm proud of that because I worked hard for every A possible and worked two jobs at night while getting through school. I have BLS and ACLS. I'm taking the GRE in February but so far with how I have done on practice tests I can estimate to do around 320. I shadowed a CRNA twice and loved it, and I have solid recommendations from my manager, a previous professor, and a physician. And experience wise I worked a year in LTAC ICU (which doesn't count I know) and by the time I apply almost a year in this ICU as I previously described.

Please help!!!. All feedback will be appreciated! Thanks.

I'm also in the same boat. I only have 1 year experience in ccu to date, just passed my ccrn and is planning to apply to crna school. The only problem is that mu experience is solely from a very small hospital 180 beds, 12 bed icu unit and I'm worried that this would hurt my chances of getting in. I am planning to take the gre next month and then apply to about 5 programs by July. Which programs did you guys apply to or know of people who got in with 1 year of experience from a small hospital? I'm in the Texas area so I would like to attend a school in Texas if possible. Any response would be helpful. Thanks!

Personally I don't know anyone who just had one year when they entered their NA program. How's your gpa?

I have 3.6 nursing gpa and cumulative 3.2

Hi babiiphatt, don't be discouraged at all! I started working at my ICU in July 2013 and got an interview. I know that getting an interview and getting accepted are way different but at least it's something and should give you some positive feedback. My hospital is small as well and our ICU and CCU are a combined 20 beds. It's really good that you got your CCRN, I just passed mine as well. As you can see from the other posts on this thread write a good personal statement, do well on GRE, get involved in any unit councils if you have any (I'm a co-chair on a council I don't know if that helped but just saying it probably doesn't hurt). I'm in Philly so I actually don't know any programs in Texas and can't be of any help there. However, if I can tell you one thing as silly as it's going to sound, follow your dream. People will talk to you and try to discourage you, this will tell you that you're too young (or too old I don't know how old you are lol), that you haven't been a nurse long enough, so forth and so on. Don't listen to them, apply everywhere you can. Here is a link to the AANA website where you can search for programs in your state and surrounding states: Accredited Programs provided by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA)

Look up the programs and look at their requirements. In know in Philly you don't have to have the required years by the time you apply, just as long as you have them by the time you start school. The program I applied to requires 2 ICU years but you can apply as long as you're working in ICU at the time of your application. Good luck with everything and I hope I was encouraging. Seriously I had a lot of people discourage me, tell me things like "I don't think you'll pass CCRN working in THIS ICU" or "I don't think you'll even get an interview because you don't have enough experience". Well CCRN passed, interview obtained... Just keep going and read the positive posts, it will help! Good luck!

Thanks icu-rn88! That is very encouraging as I have been getting a lot of negativity lately. I have exactly 1 year ccu experience and plan to take my gre in the next month or so. I'm going to try to apply and see what they say. I will apply to other icu/ccu positions and see what are my options. I am part of the nurse practice council at my hospital. I love my hospital and would hate to leave but my passion has always been crna, and I talked and shadowed 2 already so I know what I'm getting into. I just hope I land interviews once I apply. Keeping positive!

I would say apply first to anywhere you can and see if you get interviews. Then if you don't look for another job. As you can see from posts from other members the schools really look at a whole picture, grades and experience, plus GRE, CCRN and your personal statement and recommendations. So you might not have to switch jobs and why uproot your whole life if you don't have to. I would say apply first and see, I think with a 3.6 GPA, CCRN, and if you do well on your GRE it will make up for not being in a trauma ICU, like one of the other posters on this thread said not everyone can work in a level 1 trauma center and there are other pluses to being in a community hospital because there is a lot more independence. Especially for me at night, because all we have in a hospitalist so by the time you get a hold of her you already have to have your ducks in a row. Good luck! Check back and let us know your progress.

Well everyone,

I will have my interview tomorrow (Monday), any last words of advice/encouragement? I'm really nervous, have been having crazy dreams like being at the interview and going mute or breaking into song. At this point, I would just like to get it over with and receive my verdict. Thank you all for your support and help in this process.

How did it go?

Well, it's really hard to tell because you don't get any feedback when you're there. I was extremely nervous and at some point my brain just shut off. My heart was racing and I could actually feel my voice going out at some point. I really hope that they will consider my application as a whole and not just base their decision on the interview. They said 2-3 weeks so we'll see. Honestly, not feeling too good about it, definitely could have done better but at this point there is nothing more I can do.

Any updated on your interview? I am getting PALS certified today and taking my GRE thus August since I really want to do well on it. I'm hoping to apply starting July 2015 and will have 2.5yrs icu/ccu experience then. During this year, I will try to join councils and extracurricular activities to make my app stand out. This fall I'm also taking chemistry, retaking statistics, biology. Spring 2015 I'm taking physics, Chem 2, biology 2 and summer I will take organic chem. Totally serious and hoping to make it happen. My current cumulative GPA is 3.2 and nursing GPA is 3.6 so I'm hoping these science courses will help boost my GPA and show them an upward trend as my last 2 semesters I did withdraw from classes due to having baby during nursing school with 18 hour credit load and working 24 hours a week. Yes call me crazy but my GPA did take a little beating since I have 3 kids to support. Please do update me as you and dfw nurse and many others have given me new inspiration and courage to make this dream come true ;)
