Okay I have searched far and wide to find a topic relating to this but have only found older ones... I mean come on guys the world isn't really going to end December 2012. :yeah: So here's to the 2012 application cycle!

I have a ton of questions for those who are applying and those who have applied and those who are in the program. Any and all input will be much appreciated. Also just so you know, I will be attending the October 1st open house.

If I were to describe myself, I would say grade-wise I am not the strongest candidate for JHU's nursing program as it is considered top in the nation. HOWEVER I have great experience and recommendations to cancel that out. I am also trying really really hard to make those essays seem great but only 300 words? :eek:

So to anyone reading this post, what do you think I can do to make myself a stronger applicant?

Relating to specifically JHU, I have heard a million different things about their program. From "it really sucks and is not worth it" to "best program EVER". JHU is supposed to be a school that is the leader in research and also has a global perspective. Can anyone else tell me what is so special about JHU's nursing program? What is your personal experience with it?

As far as location and campus, I think it doesn't matter as long as the educational program is incredible.

Even though I had applied for Fall, I've been watching this thread for months. I got a letter yesterday saying I wasn't accepted. I'm ok with that and I really think my lack of recent experience/volunteer work hurt me. It really seems they are looking for that. Unfortunately, going to school and working 50-60 hours doesn't always leave a lot of spare time. My husband and I discussed this morning about possibly cutting back my hours and I've been looking into volunteer work but wasn't sure about getting involved in an organization when I would be planning a move and such.

I will be applying to University of Maryland for Spring 2013, which was one of my big disappointments in that I didn't qualify for Fall 2012 application for UMD. I will also be looking at other schools now that my husband is open to moving.

I got a phone call just now (7am HST) saying that I got into the BSN program but was waitlisted for the FNP MSN. However, the lady said by the time I started the BSN program there would be spots opening up and I would be admitted to the MSN program also. I'm taking this as her way of saying I'm not too far down on the waitlist. Anyone know exactly what day the program starts??

Hello all,

I just received an email (weird--I thought we got phone calls) that I was accepted to the BSN portion of the program, but wait listed for the MSN FNP program. JHU is my first choice because of the school of public health and the Center for American Indian Health (I want to work for IHS), but I was accepted to two FNP programs at other schools, and I really don't want to end up with all the debt of a BSN at JHU without the job security of becoming an FNP. What do you think I should do? Anybody have advice about being wait listed? I have a friend in last year's traditional BSN cohort and she was originally wait listed, but received her acceptance into the MSN FNP program about two weeks later. Is this common? Do we stay on the wait list through the BSN portion? What are the chances of being accepted to the MSN FNP program if I have to reapply? It's kind of stupid to get accepted to two other awesome FNP programs and still be worrying so much because of JHU. UGH!

i went to an open house and the guy who talked to us said you can apply for the msn program at any point when you are in the bsn. he said they sometimes prefer this because it may take you a little while to figure out exactly what you want to specialize in. he also said that it is much easier to do that, than to get accepted into the combined bsn/msn then decide you want to be in a different specialty.

i also had a similar conversation with admission where they told that once you are in the bsn, picking up the msn is easy to do. also, i do not think you will be waitlisted for long ar all. i really hope you join us at jhu!

I was recently accepted in the Fall 2012 ABSN program but I've been living in Fells point for over a year now, half a mile from the school, and I'm very familiar with the area and pricing. If anyone needs any advice/tips let me know!

Hi all! I am new to this site after stumbling across it this evening while doing a google search and am happy that I found it! I've read quite a bit of the comments and thank you for your insight and advice.

URhopeful - Congrats on your acceptance! I was recently accepted as well into the Fall ABSN, but I will be attending the April accepted students day. I currently live in Portland, OR and April will be my first visit to Baltimore. Thank you so much for your positive comments about the city as it makes me more excited to visit and (most likely) move there. My top two neighborhood choices so far from what I have researched online are Charles Village and Mt. Vernon.

vnmeltzer - Congrats on your acceptance as well! I will probably take you up on your advice about area(s) and pricing! I do have a question about walking/biking between Mt. Vernon and Charles Village areas.. Do many people bike commute and is it safe to do so between those neighborhoods and the campus? How do those neighborhoods compare to Fells Point?

So I wouldn't recommend biking from Charles Village or even really Mt. Vernon. Baltimore is one of those places that has really nice neighborhoods and then walk or bike two blocks the wrong way and you're in a really terrible area. Biking is doable. It's about 4 miles from Charles Village, but you're going to go through some really impoverished areas. Charles Village would be a bit cheaper - $400-$500 for rent/month while Fells will cost you $500-800, depending on how close you want to live to the water. I live half a mile from the water and half a mile from Hopkins nursing. It's the perfect location and I pay $565. I can walk or take the free bus called the circulator.

Back to biking, I don't recommend it after dark especially.

Also depending on your age, Charles Village is a very big college town... younger kids... underage kids.

I'm a little biased after living in Fells Point and loving it but it's the best of both worlds. Fells point has a lot of mid 30s young families and it's also close to great bars and restaurants. My friends and I walk 20 minutes to Canton a lot, which is where most young professionals live. Great bar and restaurants there as well. We're also walking distance to Harbor East and The Inner Harbor.

I realize I haven't mentioned much about Mt. Vernon. I don't know much honestly about that area. I've heard it's nice. It's about 2 miles away from the school. But again, I wouldn't recommend biking at night, especially late.

Also, people have this idea about Fells Point that it's very expensive. I remember during my tour of Hopkins they were like "or you can choose to pay $1,000 and live in Fells Point." You could choose to pay that much. You would get your own 1 bedroom apt. for that. Or you can share a house with friends which is what I do and I pay half that.

Baltimore is a great city, great people, and has a lot to offer but unlike other areas in the US that some of us may be used to (I'm originally from Dallas), there is a lot of poverty as well. They say the closer to the water you are, the safer you are. if you do look in Fells Point don't look West of Broadway.

Charles Village is a college town area, but if you don't want to bike (I also don't recommend that...), you can always take the JHMI down (it runs pretty regularly and reliably.)

Hi everyone!

Question..anyone who lives near JHU now and thoughts about gyms? Does anyone use the JHU gym? I notice there aren't any 24 Hour Fitnesses out there.

Also, has anyone heard back about the Merit Scholarship or have a better estimate of when we get to find out about them? I know they said March, but just wondering when!! I know it's a long shot, but can't help but hope!

Also, do any previous students have advice or more personal experience with getting loans during the MSN portion of the program through the JHU credit union? What kinds of discounts are there if you work at the JHU hospital? Is it relatively easy to get a job at the JHU hospital after finishing the BSN portion? Do you get better interest rates through the credit union?
