Summer Entry 2012 Accelerated BSN Johns Hopkins

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Okay I have searched far and wide to find a topic relating to this but have only found older ones... I mean come on guys the world isn't really going to end December 2012. :yeah: So here's to the 2012 application cycle!

I have a ton of questions for those who are applying and those who have applied and those who are in the program. Any and all input will be much appreciated. Also just so you know, I will be attending the October 1st open house.

If I were to describe myself, I would say grade-wise I am not the strongest candidate for JHU's nursing program as it is considered top in the nation. HOWEVER I have great experience and recommendations to cancel that out. I am also trying really really hard to make those essays seem great but only 300 words?

So to anyone reading this post, what do you think I can do to make myself a stronger applicant?

Relating to specifically JHU, I have heard a million different things about their program. From "it really sucks and is not worth it" to "best program EVER". JHU is supposed to be a school that is the leader in research and also has a global perspective. Can anyone else tell me what is so special about JHU's nursing program? What is your personal experience with it?

As far as location and campus, I think it doesn't matter as long as the educational program is incredible.

p.s. You are awesome for reading my novel. There have been many a times where I skipped over long posts. :coollook:

Thanks for the advice vnmeltzer! This has been very helpful.. I'll be visiting in April so hopefully the city layout will start coming together for me. I'm bummed about not being able to bike, but glad that there is a shuttle available. You've sold me a bit on Fells Point.. it sounds like the community I'd like to live in. Is it safe then to walk to Canton and Inner Harbor from Fells Point? I noticed that Patterson Park is near there. I have a big dog and like to take her for long walks, is it safe to walk around that area?

Thanks again!

Hey Embracechange,

It's definitely safe to walk to canton. My roommate and I do it all the time and we're in our mid 20s. As for the inner harbor it's also safe and manageable but it's a bit of a walk. You can take the circulator (free bus) it's really awesome and clean and goes straight to Hopkins nursing but anyways you can take that to the inner harbor, harbor east, and quite a few other places.

Patterson park is safe and great for dogs; however, just don't go at night!

When in April will you be visiting?

I have the same questions about the merit and the job stuff... just wanted to let you know you're not alone :)

I went to accepted student's day in March and someone asked about gym's. Apparently there is a gym in the School of Public Health (which is adjacent to the SON). And then I think there was another gym option somewhere on the JH medical campus.... I seem to recall the price being $128 for 12 months?? Maybe someone else can speak to that a bit better than I can...

I am dying to know about scholarships---I was told they would be looked at in March.

As for the gyms, the AC on the Homewood campus is fairly nice, but as someone mentioned, it is not 24/7. Some of the apartments in the area (Marylander, Halstead) have their own gyms as well. There are a lot of fitness options though---nursing students can join whatever recreational student activities JHU offers (I remember a nursing student on our club lacrosse team who actually helped pique my interest in nursing.) There are also a lot of diverse fitness clubs, e.g. martial arts clubs, club sports, dance groups, etc. for people like me who hate working out and need diversion (like a ball to chase after or something :))

hi vnmeltzer!

thanks again for getting back to me! i like that i can walk between neighborhoods.. i enjoy walking rather than taking the bus if i can, but the circulator sounds awesome! love free transportation :-) i will be visiting for accepted students day april 20th.. i'll be there that whole week to check out neighborhoods. my sister lives in annapolis, so i'll also be visiting her for the first time since she's lived out there.

did you move to baltimore for school?

dorénavant - thanks for the info about gyms and fitness clubs, those sound fun!

Embracechange,

I did move to Baltimore for school. I actually went to Goucher, a small liberal arts college located in Towson, a suburb of Baltimore. Originally I'm from Texas but I moved back out here a year ago to qualify for in state tuition for MD if I decided to go there instead or didn't get into Hopkins.

I'll be at accepted students day as well!

vnmeltzer, when did you graduate from goucher?? I went there, too!

Hey!

I graduated in 2009! When did you graduate?

Ah, so close.. I was 2005

Ah... yeah you got out right when I got in!

hi everyone,

i had contacted JHU about the merit scholarship, and they said that they hoped to get the final list by tomorrow! that was what they said earlier this week, but i hope that means we could find out by tomorrow! i know it's a longshot..but i can't help hoping!!

i'm so confused.... at 9:15am this morning, i had an email that said, "please note: the recipients of the gurtler and pc fellows scholarships for returned peace corps volunteers, the merit scholarships, and the fuld fellowships for summer bs accelerated student have all been notified."

but they told you that they hoped to have the list by tomorrow?

and did they say how they are notifying people? by phone? by snail mail?
