My School is Gone!

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I was supposed to start the semester yesterday. I was supposed to graduate in May with my FNP. My school is in New Orleans. I have no school to go back to. I know most schools will only accept 12 hr graduate transfer hours. I have only 10hrs left to graduate from the program I was in.

I wonder what will happen now?

Glascow- good to hear from you. I did a preliminary search. Gonzaga University in Washington State lists an FNP program with online component. It is a Jesuit school. I believe it might have said something about occasional travel, but given your circumstances- who knows- maybe they could wave this. The best to you and your colleagues.

Thanks, I knew I could count on you guys for some info! I will check it out now!

Specializes in NICU.

We're not Jesuit, but I know Columbia is taking students, and we have an FNP program.

Specializes in ICU, ER, HH, NICU, now FNP.

TWU, UT-Austin, UT-Arlington, Texas Christian, UT health Sci center San Antonio, many texas universities have NP and FNP programs - I do not know how much of the programs are online, but perhaps some of the classes you need are.

I would call each of them.

Texas Christian University does not have an NP/FNP program. They run CRNA and CNS programs. The CNS program is all online. Just wanted to save a you a phone call. If you needed core classes (patho, etc), you may be able take it there. Good luck glascow.

Yes, I should have been more clear about TCU - they have advanced courses, such as patho and theory - but not an FNP program per se.

I agree 100%, and I will be assisting FEMA with the rescue efforts going on, really looking forward to seeing all the dead bodies floating in the water. SInce this is a nsg graduate student forum I only posted the loss of my educational future, which really is insignificant in light of things. But non the less, I felt the need to talk about. I really cannot mention this "trivial" concern to anyone around here, because of course they would think the same as you. In fact, I have so many losses right now I don't think you would even comprehend.

Please forgive me if I sounded insensitive posting such a trivial problem.

Thank you for your support.

You have my support!~! I read your post and think that is NOT trivial for you to be worried about that nor is it insensitive!! (I am sure I would be worried about school as well!) You have been thru an awful lot. You should be able to come to allnurses and talk/vent to make yourself feel better and not have people jump on you! You are more than welcome to message me and vent all you like! Everyone needs a place to be able to vent. Take care and god bless!!

It is not trivial, and this is what this BB is all about... being supportive as well as offering advice, knowlege, and solutions.

(((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))), my friend.

I am sorry, truly I am.

And I am confident that where one window is closed, another WILL be opened for you.. keep the faith. Your assistance and efforts in rescue operations will be rewarded. :icon_hug:

This may be of help:

LSNA is helping coordinate an effort to get displaced nursing students back into other schools of nursing, in this state and others. Please email us at [email protected] with all your contact information, including where you went to nursing school and how far you have progressed.

Best wishes to you...

I know my school UCHSC, in Denver CO is accepting students who went to Tulane, etc other Universities that are now closed. They are also trying to help arrange housing. I don't know how flexible you are to moving, but this may be an option. Let me know, i can give you the email from the lady involved in contact and housing.

this is also the #6 FNP program in the US and #1 PNP program.

For the record, I've read news articles online indicating assistance of all kinds offered from around the world, including at one count 35 nations. For example, Kuwait offered millions worth of oil and millions in cash (as well they should). Saudia Arabia offered lots of cash. Germany offered high speed pumps and whatever else we may ask for. The Netherlands offered expert engineering assist with levy construction (they have lots of experience since they are a country below sea level). Britain offered and delivered lots of MREs. Canada and other countries offered medics and search and rescue teams. Other countries offered cruise ships. Small countries from eastern europe even offered what they could. Iran offered oil, but we turned it down. Castro offered lots of medical help, I think we turned it down. It has not been lost around the world that we so generously help everywhere.

I don't want to make something sound negative in light of what has happen. Being from the lower Alabama (30 minutes from the coast and all), I wish my best to all of the areas destroyed. I however do have a couple of questions:

Glascow: You stated, "really looking forward to seeing all the dead bodies floating in the water". That is a really awful thing to say. I have worked in virology as a team medic on a viral threat repsonse team, and have seen alot of dead bodies. That is something noone wants (noone in the right frame of mind) to see. I hope I misunderstood you. If not, then I would be more worried about upstairs than your missing school.

To other countries: With all politics aside, I have to say this. A Canadian once wrote (after 911, when fellow Canadians started saying we deserved what happen), that the US is one of the very first countries to send help to ANY country that needs it in time of crisis (whether it be natural disaster, or what). We spend billions, and send thousands of experts, rescue teams, and so forth trying to fix up countries that were devestated by such occurrences. My question is, where are any of those countries now? I have not heard one word about other countries sending help in any form of relief. If I am wrong, please let me know. I want to think that there are other people out there that are more caring (to help others, not only in their own country). if you are sending help (as individuals), please disregard this, if you can.

I am sure I will be basted for this. But right now, I don't care. The way I see it, with all political bs aside. My neighbor needed help. They have no water, food, or shelter. I go help them. Try to comfort them as best as possible. My neighbor eventually recovers. One day, I lose everything, where is thy neighbor to help me? On vacation of course. Politics should never have play when it comes to such horrific scenes, but unfortunately it does. And all too often. I am tired of it. The way I see it (and probably alot of other people feel the same way). And this may seem selfish, but I really don't care right now. People are dead. Good people. Bad people. It doesn't matter what you believe in. Fellow human beings are currently in need of help - really bad. The way things are going in this world, unfortunately a mentallty of : If you want help from "me" (my country) in time of need, then be prepared to help me (my country) in the same. Period.

Like I said, some of you will be offended, but I don't care. There are more important things in this world, than politics. And if you really love nursing, then politics has no play in our field. And having the desire to see dead bodies float in the water, then you have no business being in the field of nursing.

Have you asked around at different colleges yet? I have heard that colleges are making special exceptions for people whose school plans got thwarted by Katrina - I'd check it out - Let me know if you're interested in Umass, whose nursing school has many programs. Write me off list at [email protected] if you'd like me to find some info for you.
