Well, I will never learn. I have been in the UPMC system for 5 years (been a nurse for 7), and once again, the evil empire screws me over! I was "laid off" from my job due to "financial problems" UPMC have been having (yeah, right) and I see that they are having a Nursing job fair!!! I thought they needed to "lay off" staff, even nurses, because of the economy???? Call me crazy, but it sure as hell doesn't look that way to me. Just so everyone knows, I am a great nurse - never had any disciplinary problems - NO marks on my record or my license. Anyone else having the same or similar problem???

DO NOT WORK FOR THE EVIL EMPIRE - UPMC!!!!! :devil:

:banghead: :angryfire :madface::grn:

Why don't you attend the job fair and see what the recruiter has to say to you?

New nurses work cheaper. At the DarkSide, it's all about the bottom line. Imagine how many nurses they could hire for what they pay for those obnoxious commercials.

Specializes in Pediatric/Adolescent, Med-Surg.

As a dark side employee for the last two years, I believe that they are not actually suffering financially, but instead are taking advantage of the recession to save up more money for themselves. UPMC angers me very much with their practices, and, I am one of a growing number of employees that believe things would not be quiet so bad if UPMC was unionized.

Specializes in critical care; community health; psych.

Another Dark Sider here and it's getting darker. It seems like every day there's a new staff-slashing, cost-cutting, stress-mongering measure that increases the workload and makes absolutely no sense at all. I've never seen morale so low. Watch your backs boys and girls.

Just last week at work they "mandated" me to work 17hrs straight (I was scheduled for 12) despite the fact that that the dark side has policies against mandation. Morale is dropping.

I can't even count the number of times I have heard during orientations "you aren't counted in the numbers". Numbers, huh? That's all we are to them is numbers. We aren't professionals who keep their hospitals running...we are NUMBERS.

I'm getting out...I encourage all the nurses to also. Wouldn't it be hilarious if all the nurses just walked out?

Good heavens Christine! Don't say the "U" word anywhere the DarkSide's minister's can hear you. You may be banished to the DarkSide's weak little sister, WPAHS. Just the mention of the "U" word makes the Evil Empire's honchos lose sphincter tone.

It would be awesome if all of us just walked out, and see the dark side try to staff all of those hospitals and facilities without us. For as big as they are, they could and should treat much better care of their employees.

I would love to get out, I have 3 1/2 years left on my 4 year contract. I have been considering breaking it. Ironically, UPMC would require me to pay all of the money back in one lump sum, they do not believe in payment plans.

LOL, Don't worry I don't say the "u" word around work. I have been mistreated, and seen so many others mistreated by the dark side it isn't even funny. I have seen people falsely fired, encouraged to push work related injuries under the table, I've seen them refuse to pay for the care related to work related injuries, and more. Not to mention, many of their staffing ratios I find very, very unsafe. The incident that happened back in Dec at Montifore, didn't even surprise me.

The job is tough enough without the employer making it tougher. It's a shame you guys can't band together and strike back against the Evil Empire. Without the RNs, they are nothing (well, they would still own a LOT of real estate :D). Some of my friends who were formerly employed by the Evil Empire told me that any talk about unions was dealt with quickly, harshly, and probably illegally. They moved on to smalller, friendlier systems that will (ironically) likely someday be swallowed by the Dark Side.

This sounds soo familiar...as it all happened to me! :banghead:

ChristineN: My advice, I would just finish out your last 6 months so they don't have a hold over you.
