I am being told by my employer that fecal disimpaction is considered patient abuse?? Really?? Help!!!!

So, how can people with spinal cord injuries that need bowel protocol (which can include fecal disinfection) be possible? :blink:

Is that the EXACT words a supervisor stated? Was it written down?

A LOT more to this story....unfortunately due to an investigation, I am not at liberty to tell the rest. I CAN tell you they are classifying a fecal disimpaction (not performed by myself, I was an observer) as abusive.

Can you find a facility policy that indicates whether or not nursing staff may disimpact a patient? If pt was able to and did give consent, I'm not sure how patient abuse occurred, though it is perhaps against facility policy.

In many states manual disimpaction requires a provider order due to vagovagal and other risks. Plus patient consent.

Its been years since I've seen or had to do one. Years ago it was common in LTC, but now it is classified as a sentinal event. Now everyone is on a plan and we have a protocol to prevent. I know you need an order but are you asking if it is in the scope of practice?

Try sending someone to the ER for a disimpaction.
