HUP, CHOP, Jeff, Christiana?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

I am relocating back to the area, and interviewing at these facilities. I have only been an RN for less than a year, so I'm looking for facilities/nurses that LIKE to teach. I'll be in West Chester, so I'm including Christiana in the mix, and I can commute either way. So far, CHOP and HUP have been the friendliest in simply arranging interviews, lots of attitude from Jeff and Christiana. HUP also offered the highest pay, CHOP and Jeff the same, and Christiana absolutely last, but I wouldn't have to commute to the city for Christiana. Your thoughts?

I've never worked at HUP, but have been a patient there, and think it is highly over-rated. It is also not a terribly easy commute from West Chester.

It sounds like you are interested in larger, teaching hospitals, but there are also a number of good facilities in the Delaware and Chester County areas, such as Riddle, Delaware County Memorial, Paoli, Chester County Hospital, and Brandywine. I've had experiences with these facilities (as an interviewee, employee and/or patient), and thought well of them.

Good luck on your move!

Jolie, thanks but I already tried the facilities you mentioned, and they will not train in the area I am seeking. I would be taking a train, and not driving in.

I work at HUP in the OR, but not as a nurse. I do know that this is definitely a teaching hospital. I don't know how true it is but I've heard that you can make a little more working in the OR. Another thing their benefits are great and I love it.

I work at CHOP and they have a really great program for new grads. If you are on an ICU floor it is 12 weeks orientation, on a general floor it is anywhere from 6-12 weeks. They are very nice and really take care of their employees. I have friends working for HUP and for Christiana. I would say avoid Christiana if you can, they are the "big" hospital in DE and so they think that everyone wants to work there and basically are pretty bad about getting back to people, esp new grads about jobs, interviews, ect. Plus from what I hear they don' pay enough or give good raises. Everyone I know working at HUP seems to like it, but they are all in a ritical care internship position that gives them lots of classes and training. Hope that helps. Good luck!

My friend's sister works for CHOP - she loves it! She's a new grad too, only out a couple of years I think. I might chat her up when I find out about school (waiting for admit letter). Good luck!

I don't know about the philly hospitals, but I've worked at Christiana, and I'd say they're kind of behind the times, in a lot of ways. it's close to philly, but the attitudes and the docs are very conservative. I'd go for CHOP, if you want to work with kids, but the neighborhood is kind of bad, isn't it? In any case, I'd avoid Christiana. Good luck.

I used to live near CHOP, the neighborhood is fine for "Philly standards". If you are driving in, no problem. If you are taking the subway or train, it's fine during the day...but I never travelled on public transportation at night (after 11 or 12 pm). The thing with Philly is that you can have a few blocks of nice neighborhood, then a bad spot. I used to live in center city by the art museum, and in west philly around 45th and chestnut. I felt safe, as long as I wasn't out late at night. The person I know at CHOP commutes in from NJ.

Would you consider Hahneman, Temple, Osteopathic, or MCP? So many big hospitals there in Philly. What area of nursing are you interested in?

hi i work at saint christophers and i love it.. Its smaller than chop obviously its part of tenet and they have a really good program for new grads... I just graduated in may 05 and it was a good experience....I live in west chester too and the commute is fine you just miss the traffic with each shift... I have worked for christiana and hated it.. they were not very nice.. i also worked for chop and the hiring process was retarted lol and then I didn't like the floor or the people but I leave it up ot the floor for me not liking it... whatever you decided good luck!

a gentle thought here- let's please watch how we use our words. i don't intend this as a flame.

the previous poster referred to the hiring process at a philadelphia hospital as 'retarted' and i believe she meant 'retarded'; i feel certain she wasn't looking at the big picture when typing the reply-- most people are simply unaware that using words such as 'retarded' to describe a process or person is disrespectful to those who are challenged in some way as well as those who are not.

peace

I do apologize if I offended anyone, yes I understand where you are coming from and I know it is a word that people use in a negative way to describe the mentally challanged but I don't think of the mentally challenged that way.. I have a brother who is challenged and I don't see the problem with the word in the context I used it. but to reword what I said... chops new hire process was below average, not what I expected at all :) happy?
