OHSU and other PDX area applicants for 2009

U.S.A. Oregon

I wanted to start a thread for those who are starting to apply to the local Portland nursing schools for 2009. Maybe state what school(s) you will be applying to and where you are in your process. I'm applying at OHSU OCNE and PCC. No need to state GPA or points or anything. I just mailed off my app to OHSU the other day, but still need to do my proctored essay. I sent the school the information for my proctor but have not heard anything yet. PCC will have apps available in December, so now I'm waiting for that. Good luck to everyone!

I know they took 18 people into the grad entry program last year (psych and midwifery), according to the website. I assume that midwifery would be half that. I didn't get an interview, so I guess I'll be re-applying next year. I got into the CNL program at UP, but that's not really what I want.

Thanks, Bluee! You've convinced me to apply to MHCC and CCC as well. Are there any other CC's in the Portland area that are part of OCNE? I'm new to the area, and am not too sure about what all of my options are.

I think the CC route might actually be a better fit for me than the accelerated BS at OHSU, not only because the price is outstanding, but because I'm 6 months pregnant and am really worried about the intensity of the ABM program and the amount of time I'd have to spend away from my baby. Seems like an associate's program would be less intense and more doable for me, and I could always do a bridge program to midwifery. Thanks again!

Wow! Congrats on the baby! How exciting. Do you know boy or girl? We didn't find out with either of ours and it was so much fun! So, I would HIGHLY recommend NOT doing the ABM with a newborn! I was pregnant with my 2nd son during my pre-reqs of A&P. I finished A&P1 in December and was due in early Feb. I debated taking A&P2 knowing we would have family in town for a month after the baby was born. I figured they could help take care of the baby, except feeding him, and I could study, etc. I was due right around mid-terms and talked to the instructor and she said she could accomodate me if I needed it. I knew that the family in town would last until very close to finals so I thought it might work. Hubby was a little worried, remembering back to what the first 6 weeks were like with our first son and he suggested I take time off. I AM SOOOOOOO GLAD I DID!! I went back in the fall and winter quarters to finish up the other 2 sections of A&P. My son was about 7 months old...perfect timing.

Is this your first child? If so, then you may want to wait a year if it's possible. I was only taking 1 class at a time and felt that was plenty on my plate. I am a full time stay at home mom. My kids are 3.5 and 2 and I am now feeling like things are getting "easy" enough (but it's never easy) to apply to nursing school.

Of course, with the way things are with the schools right now, if you get accepted, you better take your chance when you get it, right? I, too have the ultimate dream of becoming a midwife, but I am going to take it one step at a time right now. I'd like to get through nursing school and get some experience in L&D but I am also interested in peds or NICU or mother/baby, so I'd like to see how the various clinicals go.

Whatever you decide, best of luck to you!!

Thanks for the congrats! We're keeping the gender a surprise :) I'm very excited.

Haha... I had no intention of doing the ABM program with a newborn, but thanks for the advice! Since I applied last year and they keep your application materials on file for a year, I decided it wouldn't hurt to reapply. Then I would defer my acceptance if it came to that (I'm relieved to say it didn't).

I do plan on starting in the fall if I get accepted to any of the community college programs. I think it'd be doable, and I'm determined enough to make it work, with lots of family support of course. For many reasons, I'd like to complete my RN while my baby is still little.

As far as interview questions went last year, it was really nothing profound. They just want to know the obvious: why you want to be a midwife, past experiences you've had... That's all that comes to mind right now... Nothing off-the-wall or note-worthy. Good luck!

Thanks, doulalove, and congrats on the upcoming baby! :lol2:

Hi everyone,

I dont know what PDX stands for (Portland??) but I applied to OHSU's OCNE for 2009. My application isnt complete yet, I dont have my proctored essay in. But let me know if this is the right place to post. I'm assuming it is.

Congrats to all who got in!! (To other programs) :-)

PDX is from the airport nomenclature. As a kid I could never figure out how PDX was the acronym of Portland International Airport. PDX sounds cooler than PIA though!

Don't forget to apply to the area OCNE community colleges (MHCC and CCC). Cheaper than OHSU for the first 2 years, and same degree. Will PCC be ready this year or next year in 2010?

Oh, its kind of like LAX, except the D isnt as relevant. Good to know :-)

Since those are OCNE, does that mean I get a BSN from OHSU (is that what my degree would say?), and is it a separate application from the one I already paid $120 for? (Im assuming it is for now.) Because I put down OHSUs Portland/main campus as my choice--I visited and fell in love :redbeathe

Oh, I don't know, the D is the end of PortlanD. :smokin:

If you go to an OCNE CC, you would graduate from that school w/an AD, and be able to automatically matriculate into OHSU for a BS -- i.e. it would be one more year, but you be able to sit for your NCLEX after the CC program.

And yes, you have to pay the application cost and apply separately to each school.

Ah, I see. I'm scrambling to find other schools to apply to, mostly for the ABSN program---I want to do it in as little time as possible, but in a decent program.

I'll keep other options in mind though:-)

Does anyone have any tips/advice for the proctored essay? I have an appointment for 2/15, and the deadline is 2/17. Is that too risky?

I got a call from OHSU today saying I was accepted to their ABM program!! (in midwifery) This makes me so happy! Their program looks incredible! Has anyone else who applied to the ABM heard back yet?

I just turned in my application for the OHSU OCNE program. Good luck to all of you! I am excited to hear when people start hearing back even though it is so far away!

I finished my essay for OHSUs OCNE, will be sending it out today. Good luck to everyone too :-) I know I will need it!

Now for the wait. Is it just you and me, deasiac?
