  1. I'm pretty sure that $55,000 is including what they think you will need to live, including housing, etc. The estimated tuition was still around 39,000 in state.
  2. I applied to the midwifery program at OHSU three times before I got in. The first two times, I called and spoke to admissions and they were happy to tell me where I was weak.
  3. I'm 32. (31 at time of application)
  4. I was also told that it is much easier to get in to the midwifery program if you already have your BSN. In fact, when I asked about it before I applied last fall, I was told that the previous year, they had more than 100 applicants for the ABSN to Midwifery program for 8 slots, but they only had two RN applicants to the midwifery program. Also, I'm happy to share my specific stats with anyone who wants to PM me, but I agree with whoever said that they probably don't give a lot of weight to your numbers. I have nearly a 4.0 for my undergrad (and a 4.0 in prerequisites) and a great GRE score and it took me three applications to be accepted. The first two times, they told me they wanted to see more birth experience and more leadership experience. I've lived overseas, speak conversational Spanish and German, and was a doula the last two times I applied. My advice is to make your essays outstanding and prepare well for the interview!
  5. Ah, for some reason I just got this now -- I had to notify them by March 16th, and they deposited my check on the 22nd.
  6. I got my acceptance letter on Tuesday!! No phone call for me, either.
  7. I just got my acceptance letter for the OHSU accelerated bachelor's to master's in Midwifery (starts in June) on Tuesday, but I haven't heard back from the accelerated bachelor's program yet (also starts in June). When I had my interview, they told me they send out a first round of acceptances and wait to hear back (I had to reply by the 16th) and then send out another round of acceptances before they send out the wait-list and denial letters.
  8. Well, a friend of mine got her acceptance to the OHSU grad-entry midwifery program yesterday, and I didn't get anything yesterday or today, so I suppose that means I'm probably out. Has anyone else heard? I haven't yet heard back from Seattle University either.
  9. I actually only completed three quarters at OSU (we had to move out of state, so I'm in the midst of re-applying to programs here). However, even with two young kids, the schedule was difficult but manageable. Depending on when we scheduled (do it the first hour of the first day you can!!!! seriously, I stayed up until midnight one night in order to schedule at 12:01am), we had class/clinical anywhere from 3 to 5 days a week. If your schedule is only 3 days, they are long, long days -- like 7am-9pm of fairly solid schedule -- but you then have two days off, so there is definitely a trade-off. I know when I was there, they were trying to move to more online/hybrid (some online, some in class) courses to make scheduling more flexible, but I preferred in-class courses, at least for the ones they had chosen (Patho is, in my opinion, much more difficult online!).
  10. A couple of questions about graduate school interviews... 1. Obviously you want to look nice and put together, but is this a suit-and-tie kind of thing or a slacks-and-a-sweater kind of thing? Does it matter the area of the country? I live in Portland, OR and have found that people here are *really* casual about dress, to the point where I've gone to a business-y meeting and felt overdressed because I wasn't wearing a fleece and khakis. Interview is also on the West Coast. 2. What kinds of things do they ask? Is it like a verbal admissions essay or something different? 3. Should I have questions ready to ask?
  11. I just got my invitation to interview from Seattle U! So excited!
  12. Anyone heard anything yet? I heard from OHSU -- they told me they are no longer doing interviews, and they will not be sending out acceptance letters until APRIL! GAH! Still haven't heard anything on an interview at Seattle U. Good luck to all of you...I'll let you know as soon as I hear *something*
  13. I have never come across any nursing program that didn't have prerequisites. Every accelerated BSN/grad-entry MSN program has the same standard prerequisites (microbiology, A&P) and some have additional ones (stats, chem, nutrition, growth and development). I don't think you are going to find a program that doesn't have SOME prerequisites because there are just some things you need to understand in order to be a good nurse. In addition, even if they don't require you to have taken the prerequisites at application, they are all so competitive that you will be at a serious disadvantage if you haven't taken *something* they are looking for and received a good grade. It's not like they are just trying to see if you can jump through hoops. They are looking to find people who will be successful in a very rigorous program.
  14. I took stats last fall -- not nearly as bad as expected:)
  15. ahhh, what brings me to midwifery...where should I start??! hahahaha Part my own experience with labor and birth and part a firm belief that education and empowerment of women with regards to their reproductive health is the best way I can personally make a significant difference in the lives of women. How about you?
