Do any of you have 2nd jobs?

Hi. I'm a fairly new OR nurse (3 mos on Oct 10) and I've noticed that more than a few of my colleagues have 2nd jobs. Some have unrelated jobs (Belk's, etc) and others double as the office nurse for their specialty. I am now considering taking a prn med-surg or ICU job once I get off orientation to supplement for the shift and weekend diffs that I am missing and to keep some of my nursing skills. What do you all think of that? What are your experiences?

I work 3-12 hr shifts, Mon.,Tue., and Wed. so I work PRN at a small Community hospital near my home. I work surgery or ER, mainly, but have helped out where ever I'm needed. I try to work one extra day a week.

About second jobs, go for it. If you have the time and energy do what you can to earn money, gain experience and broaden your horizons. Put that extra income away, don't make it part of your regular spending. Its probably nice to work in a different hospital instead of just working overtime at your regular job. You'll feel much more appreciated.

After a little over a quarter century in nursing, the past 20 in the OR, I felt a little burned out, and picked up a part time job at our local radio station.

Started out just running the "board" for local sports, and network MLB games.

One night, I filled in for a news guy at a city council meeting, and have been doing the news gig for over 10 years now.

I'm the local beat reporter for our small town, covering city council, school boards, and local elections, etc.

I've been lucky enough to win several state level Associated Press awards in the mean time.

I love the break, I can do it in my spare time, and have met Governors, State Senators, and a few celebrities. I love the challenge.

In my "spare time", I work with the local EMA and teach CERT, and emergency preparedness classes.

Can you say work-a-holic??!!

I work PT at one of our "sister" hospitals giving breaks and lunches in the OR. I can break the circs and scrubs so I am a welcomed sight(most of the time!). I do this 3-4 days a week, on my own schedule, from 8am to 12noon. I then go over to my regular hospital and work until 11pm. The one thing nice about this arrangment isall of my hours are consecutive, so 14 hours translates into 10 regular, 2 OT and 2DT. I have been doing this for 11 years. I have worked over the years at 3 SurgiCenters off and on, but not lately. Love the radio gig McMike55!
