Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Starting a thread for the May, 2018 start date. Does anyone know the timetable for interviews and the process in general? I was hoping to keep in touch with others along the way. Thank you!

Yes, thank you! All classes are in the nursing school itself? Any words of wisdom about things you learned early on? Even though I don't know how I'll fare with the acceptance process, I'm still planning ahead. Is the gym within walking distance of the Nursing School? Thanks again!

Hi all!

I have applied for May 2018 and my interview is this coming Friday! I was hoping to go to an in person interview but as I live four hours away they are having me do a phone interview as we are expecting inclement weather this week. For anyone that has interviewed, what can I expect and do you have any tips or suggestions? A friend of mine went through the program 2 years ago and I am interested to see if anything has changed in the interview process since then.

Good luck to everyone!

Hey, be prepared to have lots of questions about the program itself. My interview focused mainly on questions that I had about the program in addition to general info.

Hi-I had a pleasant experience. The questions for/about the school were the last part of interview for me. They asked me questions about me and my abilities/traits. I had prepared myself with common questions asked in nursing school interviews. I didn't really get many of those, but the process still helped me.

I am in the program now. No one in my cohort is in the master's program and theres only 1 or 2 in the cohorts before me. Honestly, it's probably a good idea. Everyone starts out the program thinking they'll be in peds and that they will be NPs in a couple years but many things change. You go to clinical and you realize you can't stand what you once thought you wanted and that being an RN is completely different from NP. There are SO many things you can do with nursing, and they really emphasize that. Additionally, from my experience, if you graduated from the school of nursing and stay and work for their hospitals, you have a pick of what department you want to go to (if you have great recommendations/grades, the ICU-even peds may hire you and thats almost unheard of in any other hospital for new grads), and you're almost a shoe-in for whatever program you decide to do later on.

Hi rr33,

So no one is doing the Master's portion too? I had my interview last month and curious as to where I stand I touched base with U Rochester and they told me I was only being considered for the Accelerated Bachelor's portion even though I applied to the Master's portion. I'm not sure why-apparently more details will be given once the offer is released in late January/early Feb. but I thought this was really odd especially because no one is doing the Master's in your cohort. Do they not have that portion established yet I'm wondering..?

I just read on their website that you must have substantial health care experience, a high GPA, & strong overall app for AMPNN. Look at the FAQ's questions on the following link. That's the only info I can uncover. I did not apply to the Master's portion, but was curious about your question.

How did the interview go? Did you see any other people interviewing? Did interviewer tell you when to expect a response? I have heard January, and I have heard February.

I met with one of the directors prior to applying as I had a few questions about whether to apply for the accelerated masters vs. bachelors as I currently have my masters in counseling and am hoping to pursue the psychiatric mental health specialty.

The way it was described to me is that they rarely accept individuals into the masters program because they see a value in practicing as an RN to gain experience in a variety of settings. Despite my desire and experience in the MH field, I was still encouraged to pursue to bachelors program strictly based on experience. The responsibilities as an RN vs. NP are vastly different and my thought is they value that experience as an RN, also - it can be hard to determine what you are truly interested in if you have not been exposed to or have experience in different settings which you will see throughout clinicals and what not.

Just my thoughts based on my discussion with one of the directors a while ago.

Also - I'm getting so anxious for the end January, the nerves and excitement have finally set in! Hope I'm not the only one checking my mail and phone excessively !

So you heard end of January??? I am also very nervous-excited!! Hard to concentrate on anything else!!!

I heard end of January maybe start of February - I was surprised to see they were still interviewing!

Yes. My interviewer mentioned they were interviewing up until the winter break. When I saw a previous thread, I assumed I had misunderstood the interview schedule. Maybe they had a lot of applicants?

ahh okay that makes a lot of sense and it's what I really like about U Rochester- the break in between ! It's odd that they even offer the direct entry to MSN then. The reason I was applying was because most schools that do that gap year solidify your spot in the Master's portion pending your good grades and work experience, etc.

Thanks for clarifying!!
