Too many options for Rn to BSN...

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I am currently ADN RN working at a community health center. I enjoy my patients as i serve a need in a undeserved population. I want to start working on my goal of becoming a nurse practitioner. So i need to start by attaining my BSN. I am looking for a program for RN to BSN. I need it to be reputable and not too expensive that i can't go. There are soooo many options but i am so overwhelmed im not sure what to do. I need to make sure that i will get accepted into a reputable masters program so its important that i dont go to a degree factory. i currently live in NY (hudson valley) area. I am 35 and i have 4 children so it must be flexable. thanks for any input..

Some affordable, reputable online RN-to-BSN degree options include Fort Hays State University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and the University of Texas at Arlington.

All three programs are online and less than $10,000 in tuition. Fort Hays State University is the most affordable at $182 per credit.

I recommend looking closer to home -- preferably at schools where some of your colleagues have gone previously and/or your local employers will be familiar with them. They may be able to give you good advice and support if they have some experience with the program. It may also be easier to set up local clinical experiences if the school already has affiliation agreements with local facilities and/or they would like to have such an agreement in place because they anticipate having several other students from your region. And local agencies are much more likely to cooperate with the unique requests of schools within their region than they are with schools from across the country.

Another advantage to a school within driving distance is that you could visit the campus if you needed to resolve an issue, meet with a professor in person, or attend a condensed version of a class. A friend of mine recently did that with her online school, 4 hours away -- went for 1 week and got a whole course done in a special on-campus version of the required physical assessment class.

So ... ask your nursing friends, people at work, etc. for recommendations and see what they say. Those schools may be a good place to explore first.

thanks for the information . I will definitely check out those schools as well as the closer ones.
