Tidewater Community College 2013-2014 Nursing

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everyone, I would like to start a new thread for all the nursing students who got accepted into the Tidewater Community College Beazley School of Nursing 2013-2014. I will be starting in the August cohort and would like to meet some of my future class mates. If you are in another cohort, please add to the thread and we can all share information. Best of luck to everyone who will be nursing students this fall and spring!

I have another question for you ladies in the program now. How do the semesters work? In Texas, my mom said you don't go in the summers. But from what I've read here it seems like you do at TCC, unless I'm just mistaken. Is this true? And if so what would that mean for how long it takes to complete the program? Say if I were to start Fall 2014, when would I be finished? Sorry if this seems like an obvious question, maybe I'm just not looking hard enough or missing something, just curious though. :) Thanks.

Just know it is TOUGH to do a class, especially one with a lab at the same time you're in this program.

True. The classmates who had to take micro during the program were absolutely miserable. For myself, I also had to take one last pre-req--a non-science--during the nursing program and it was the roughest 8 weeks of my life.

Unless they changed the program since I was in it, the program is 5 semesters long and you will be in class during the summer. If you were to start in August 2014 (Cohort 1) you can expect to graduate in May 2016. Adjust your end-date accordingly based on what cohort you are placed into.

And for the person who a while back asked if SDV 100 was an acceptable substitute for 101...it's not. You need to take 101.

Hi Mandiiieee,

Yep. Meriwhen is right. You definitely go during the summer. Classes start around the middle of May and go for eight weeks, ending around the second week of July. After that, you have a break until the Fall semester starts. So, let's say you are in Cohort 1 beginning in August 2014. You'll graduate in May 2016. If you start in Cohort 2 in October 2014, you finish the program during the summer and you graduate in December 2016, and so on. And don't worry--when it comes to getting everything straight, there really are no "obvious" questions!! There's a lot of confusion out there, so any question is a good question!!

Hope this helps!

:)

@2Sugars well I planned on taking bio142 this coming fall semester if I planned on applying for the spring start orogram of 2014. I didn't even know you can still be in the program taking any science courses. I thought all of that had to be completed BEFORE the start of the program. My question was just if I should wait to apply to the program since I only have a 3.29 and only completed 2 sciences...

IMO, getting an A in that 3rd science would definitely improve your chances as it'll boost your GPA.

Then again, you have to take the HESI exam...I graduated before that was implemented. Not sure how the HESI affects your chances of getting in.

I agree with Meriwhen. Give yourself the best opportunity to boost your gpa as that will increase your chances of being accepted. :)

Ok thanks ladies! :)

How are you guys paying for nursing school if you don't mind me asking? Are you paying your own way? Using financial aid alone, or having to take out student loans? Do any of you happen to be military spouses and using MyCAA? I'm trying to figure out how I will go about paying my way through this. I'm about to start receiving aid from MyCAA this fall, so that will take care of a lot of it, but whatever is left I'm going to be using financial aid also. Will this be enough to cover everything or do you think I will need to still take out any loans? Will financial aid pay for the uniform, shoes, and all of the other things we need? Thanks for any info. :) I have a lot of questions, if I think of any more expect me to be back!

Is anyone else nervous/excited for orientation on monday???!!!! :)

Hey...so orientation is Monday!! I just wanted to let yall know, if it's anything like my orientation was, the people who speak might try every possible method to scare the poop out of yall. Do NOT be intimidated by these folks. Honestly, the person who led mine was a disaster. I won't even get into it, but it was because of her that I spent the first six months of the program absolutely petrified. I hope, hope, hope yall have a speaker(s) who is encouraging and helpful and not the opposite. If you have any questions or need anything cleared up after Monday, I'm more than happy to truth-tell or dispel any rumors. Just keep in mind when you're there sitting in that room that I sat there two years ago. I was terrified, intimidated, and kept thinking, "there is no WAY I can do this program". I passed NCLEX on June 18th and I start my job on Monday!! Yall are going to great. I have no doubt!! :)

We never had a real orientation...we had one day where we came in, filled out paperwork, ordered clinical uniforms and stuff, but no speakers. At one point during our first week of class, some of the second-year students came to speak with us and share their horror stories. We weren't too frightened by the speakers...the first test in 108 did a far better job of scaring us. It looks like they've seriously improved things since I served my time there.
