Sacramento City College

Nursing Students School Programs

Hello everyone! Thought I'd start a thread for everyone who is also applying to Sacramento City College for Fall 2016. We can help each other stay updated with any news, I know it definitely helps me through this long waiting period! We can also share knowledge if anyone has any questions about the application process! Good luck to all :)

Did anyone at all get the notice that they no longer accept sociology 300 and want other classes instead?? When did they make that change?? I did the sociology 300 class specially cause SCC required it for nursing and now they changed the prereqs and don't accept it??? This is so frustrating

I'll really appreciate if anyone has info about it, or when the pre-reqs changed.. this doesn't make sense to me at all :(

These are the current prerequisite courses that SCC requires for this current filing period (it closes March 4th).

  • ANTH 310 Cultural Anthropology, ANTH 481 Honors Cultural Anthropology or SOC 321 Race, Ethnicity and Inequality in the United States or SOC 482 Sociology of Race, Ethnicity, and Inequality – Honors
  • BIOL 430 Anatomy and Physiology
  • BIOL 431 Anatomy and Physiology
  • BIOL 440 General Microbiology
  • COMM 301 Introduction to Public Speaking or COMM 331 Group Discussion
  • ENGWR 300 College Composition
  • PSYC 300 General Principles
  • or PSYC 480 Honors General Principles

To answer the question of when they removed Soc 300 out of the prerequisite course list, it was this year. The 2014-15 catalog was the last time Soc 300 was listed.

It's always a good idea to keep checking the catalog/SCC nursing website for changes as well as attending at least one information meeting each year that you intend to apply for the following year. They constantly fine-tune the prerequisites and the program so it's best to keep up to date with the prerequisites and co-requisites.

From the changes made, it appears that SCC Nursing wants applicants to have a strong background in cultural diversity knowledge and this likely will be reinforced throughout the program. They probably felt (or even found) that students that take the intro sociology or anthropology courses have a more difficult time grasping the material that involves cultural differences than the students that took culture-focused courses and there will be coursework in this.

If you have taken very similar coursework, it's a good idea to challenge the requirements as it very well could save you some time/trouble in the application process.

Thanks for the info! I figured they changed it this year. It's just that I worked so hard to have everything done in time for application, and I thought I did, and then they make that change and all my work was basically for nothing. That is why I am beyond frustrated. What did you mean by challenging the prerequisites? I did do the sociology 300 as they required, but not the other courses they need now.

Wow! I didn't even notice that they changed the Sociology requirement! I had only taken Soc 300, NOT Soc 321. I put in my application for both colleges and both went through . Perhaps the changes went through recently. From what I remember when inputting my online application into SCC's eservices that I was not missing any course requirements. My application to SCC would NOT have gone through if that was the case! In any event, I am definitely going to be taking the class next semester!

Thanks for the heads-up!

Hi shitzulvr!

My application went through as well, but then I got a notice about it! I'm gonna try to fight through it, so pls give me an update whenever you know anything!

@Daryap...What notice did you receive? Was it on the eservices site??? Or was it thru Los Rios Gmail? Maybe I too will get a notice so I need to know what to look out for. I'm really bummed about this change. Makes me feel like all my hard work is moot! Feeling frustrated...

The status you WANT to see is "Qualified Applicant" or something very close to it. If you're deemed a "qualified applicant" then you've met all requirements to enter the program. It very well could be that you may have to take the "cultural" class as a co-requisite. My guess is that they'll have applicants take the course as a co-requisite instead of disqualifying applicants because there was only effectively 2 semesters of "warning" between establishment of a new requirement and implementation of it. I would suspect that if this is the case, look for the course to be "enforced" as a prerequisite next year. There's no "inside baseball" info here... I'm a bit out of the loop on this right now, so this is just an educated guess.

@shihtzulvr it was eservices and losrios email, I'll definitely try to fight them on this because I too feel like 2 years of work went down the drain, even though it is just for a chance to be selected. Anyways I am going to call them today and I will give an update.. They did say they wave this if you have an associate or bachelors degree

Thanks for ur response, @akulahalkRN! I will keep hope alive...

Yes, I realized that about 2 weeks ago when I submitted my application. I contacted the nursing department and they told me that the change is recent and that some information that is still online has not been updated to reflect this change. That makes me now ineligible for Sac City until I take that class. My application went through online as well, however, my supporting documents do not support the updated requirements.
