The most expensive class at OU?

I believe that I may have discovered - completely by accident - the most expensive undergraduate class, offered on-line at Ohio University. It is Health 230 - Medical Terminology, for which the university wants $1,270 for the 2 (two!) credit course - a whopping $635 per credit.

As I posted on another thread, I need one more credit at OU in order to meet the residency requirement of the RN-BSN program. I can take any 200-level or above class to satisfy the requirement and I wanted to try and take one of the nursing special topics courses. Unfortunately, the only special topics course open during either summer session is an NCLEX review course. Nearly all of the other classes I looked at were 4 credit courses and most of the 3 credit ones required a proctored exam, which is very difficult for me to arrange. So I registered for Medical Terminology which, since it is a 2 credit course, I figured couldn't be more than a couple of hundred dollars.

Back to the drawing board on this one.

That's absurd! If you just need any class to satisfy the requirement just go for an elective that will meet this need without breaking the bank. Geez....that's horrible!

I just checked with the registrar about why this class should be so expensive. The bottom line is that the $153 per credit tuition rate applies only to the courses offered through the Academic Outreach program. Tuition is much higher for any other class - those of us who do not live in Ohio get hit with a substantial non-resident surcharge as well.

aha...makes sense now. Just get it over with so you can graduate. But quite frankly, I'd pick something easy.

Sorry you are having to deal with this Chuckster. I do not have any advice except that maybe you can find an academic outreach class that will work if there is one you haven't already taken?

I wish I could offer more, but I actually just applied to OU yesterday and I am glad I just read this or I would have been blind-sided with the cost of electives to meet the residency requirement as well (I have a previous BS dual-major degree). I was already dissapointed to hear after I submitted the application that I would not find out what classes they accept until I am halfway through the first semester or more. I've read your threads about OU and UTA throughout your decision process and beyond- if you had to do it all over again would you still attend OU or might you consider another program? I imagine little things like this happening after all your previous issues with both UTA and OU gets extremely frustrating.

I would still pick OU. The classes are pretty straight forward and the 5 week format is wonderful. Just when you think you can't take another discussion question it's over! I really like it. And contrary to most people's experience my DARS report was pretty quick. Good luck to you. This is a great place for info!

Thanks so much for your feedback Mtsteelhorse! I will stick around this forum for sure and hopefully the DARS will come quicker. My only big concern is that they might not accept my credits for whatever reason and I wouldn't know it until I already started the program. I just can't afford (I'm paying out of pocket) to take a whole bunch of classes over again because the names aren't exact, especially if the non-nursing courses vary in cost like Chuckster found out. Fingers crossed though and thanks again!

I totally get your concern. I do know they give as much credit as possible. They tend to review the DARS then fine tune it. You could just wait until they give you the final report before starting the program. With your dual BS you'll likely meet almost all requirements. I had to take a cross cultural course but there are options outside of OU. If you need assistance with this once you know what you need PM me. Good luck!

I would second what mtsteelhorse said: The classes are indeed pretty straightforward (though we're still going to gripe about some of them) and the 5 week format is great.

Regarding the evaluation process, probably no one complained about this more than me - it was a nearly 6 month process in my case. The results were worth it however, and I can assure you that the evaluators at OU really do try hard to get you the most transfer credit possible. When I applied to OU, I also applied to another on-line program, also at a well-known state university. The second school returned my evaluation to me in less than 6 weeks but they required that I take a slew of non-nursing courses, 6 or 7 as I recall, which was kind of hard to swallow since I have 3 prior degrees, one at the graduate level and close to 300 credits. OU on the other hand took much longer but gave me credit for classes that I never expected. In fact, the reason that I have to take a non-nursing course now is because OU exempted me from the business-related nursing courses, leaving me less than half a credit shy of meeting the residency requirements. Bottom line is that I can almost guarantee you'll get a fair evaluation, well worth the pain of the wait OU puts you through.

Thank you both so much! Your experiences make me feel a lot less concerned about the whole process. I was going to apply to UTA as well, but I have read and spoken with people that all said they are very reluctant (or won't do it altogether) to accept previous university work so I hesitate to spend another hundred bucks or so out of pocket if it sounds like OU will be a good fit. I was also going to apply to University of Wyoming, but with their semesters being more traditional, I wouldn't be able to start until next Spring while I think I could start OU as early as August if all goes well. I don't love the idea of going back to school yet again, but I have to admit that I am getting a bit excited about the RN-BSN program since you guys have positive things to say and are current students. Thank you! :)

Sorry to derail this thread so much, but did you find a class that would work Chuckster? I was looking at the list online, but I am not sure which ones you already have credit for.
