Unhappy with CSCC...are there any alternatives?

U.S.A. Ohio

I submitted my application to CSCC at 9:00 am this morning. Later today, I found out that dozens of other people had the same idea. They camped out in the computer lab and all waited to hit the 'enter' key at 9:00 am. The application was supposedly for Spring '11, but only a few people will get in due to the overwhelming number of applicants from the Fall '10 crowd. I'm fairly certain that I will not start until almost a year and a half from now. I find this frustrating, considering I have the same chance of getting in as someone who has much lower grades than mine (I have a 3.9 GPA). Are there any good alternatives to Columbus State out there?

First term I either had to be there for an 8 am class or got there around 12:30 after clinicals. Those are both good times in terms of parking.

Wow! That is some real dedication. That is fantastic. = )

I put the above quote to ask: What does first term mean?

How long is your day at clinical?

Sorry. Term = quarter.

First quarter clinicals are 4 hours for the traditional program. 2nd quarter I believe that they are 8 hours. They slowly increase in length throughout the program.

Clinicals are assigned. All first quarter students are in long-term care, all second quarter students are in L&D, etc.

Specializes in Psych/med surg.

We just got our clinical assignments for next quarter in the online program. I am assigned to Grant hospital on Saturdays 7 to 2. I wish I could do weekdays but my son goes to PM kindergarten and I don't have anyone to watch him and drop him off. In the online program you have the option for Friday, Saturday, or Monday clinical. You can pick which day you prefer. Most of the online students have jobs so they need certain days. Nursing school would have been so much easier if I would have done this in my 20's.

Ahh you will love Grant. That is where I used to work. Plus, their L&D floor (4th) is brand spankin' new.

I'm a bit envious that you already have your clinical assignments for next quarter. Traditional hasn't heard yet and I would love to know so I can schedule my next three months.

No, you should not need additional coursework. While Hondros and Chamberlain are accredited, they have poor clinical sites and are not look as highly upon as Columbus State, OSU, Otterbein, Mt Carmel, and Capital. I would look at finishing up your RN-BSN at one of those 4-year universities. It would make your CRNA application look better and it will help you land an adult ICU job to get the experience prior to applying to CRNA school. I could have started at Hondros or Chamberlain quite a while ago, but I'm waiting longer for CSCC to make sure I receive a good quality education.

Also, some CRNA programs require organic chemistry (for pre-med which requires a year of chemistry) and physics, CCRN, shadowing of CRNAs, etc. Take a look at the programs you are interested in and start shadowing. It is a very hard and demanding 27 month graduate program.

However, I would recommend starting a new thread as you have just hijacked a thread about Columbus State's nursing program specifically.

"While Hondros and Chamberlain are accredited, they have poor clinical sites..."This is not true regarding Hondros, clinical sites are at Riverside, Grant, Doctors and Childrens...doesn't get much better! I attend Hondros and we have been side by side with Nursing students from Otterbein at nursing home locations.

Anyone going to be at orientation next Friday? :)
