New Grad BSN..looking for job in Columbus...There's Hope.

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

This is my first post here.

I used allnurses throughout nursing school and I am still here.

I graduated last year with my BSN. I live in Columbus, I filled out applications with all the major hospital, NWCH, OSU and Ohiohealth at first, I have an interview few weeks later with NWCH and grant, didn't get it.. So i started applying everywhere, Btn the four hospital including mount Carmel health system nothing. However, I knew somebody working at OSU and they started asking around for me and handing out my application in two weeks I got an interview., thank God.

Initially it was going to be a panel interview, but when I got there, got my finger prints done and The recruiter walked me to the nursing manager. the manager was so nice. She started telling me about the schedule and benefits, I was like I GOT this. The hiring process wasn't bad at all.

I send a thank you email to the recruiter thanking her and my strong interest in the position and walking me down to the nursing manager office.

I sent a thank you card to the nursing manager also.

They contacted me about references and they really check them thoroughly, they couldn't get some of my initial people and allowed me to replaced them. After a week I wasn't hearing anything so I called the nursing manager and left a voicemail within few hours I got an OFFER.. Yayyyy

Hi DelleRN! I was wondering where you recommend that I apply? I need to be around Columbus, Ohio. I just graduated with a BSN and recently passed the boards this month. Thank you!

Try children's always hiring new grads, and OSU. OSU is getting ready to open new department, they have started hiring in preparation for that.

But I keep hearing OSU only hires new grads through the new grad residency program and it's not available right now. When I called HR one said it will reopen in October and another said Spring so I'm not sure who was correct. Do you think I should just apply to positions that don't say anything about minimum experience or wait until the residency program? Also, when you applied for Mount Carmel how long did it take for them to get back to you or did they even contact you at all like they said they would through your email?

OSU only hires new grads through the Residency. It's a national program and everyone must go through it. Even if you apply to a regular position, you still do residency.

I graduated in December with my ADN and I'm 8 months into being a RN at OSU.

OSU doesn't require you go through new grad residency, at least, not for the position I interviewed for recently - I was interviewed along with a brand new grad. I could've had the position, but it would've required a pay cut so I turned it down, and it went to the new grad on their 8 Rhoades PCU (or maybe they just didn't mention the residency?). But it's a good program to apply to either way, as it lets you see a lot of different types of nursing. Don't ever be afraid of fellowships and residencies; you're getting paid to gain more skills.

MCHS has a new grad program that is very difficult to get into, as they have their own nursing school. I work flex for Mount Carmel now, and although they aren't magnet like OSU and OhioHealth's Grant and Riverside, they have excellent pay once you hit the 2 years of experience mark.

OhioHealth has an amazing Critical Care Fellowship for new grads. You have to have had excellent grades and references to even begin the application process, but there isn't a comparable program anywhere else that will get new grads in-depth ICU training.

Alternately, if you're willing to drive, Springfield Regional (1 hour outside Columbus) often takes new grads. Downside, they're broke and hemorrhaging experienced nurses, upside, they'll take everyone so when you get desperate, it's a good way to get experience on your resume if you're willing to work super short-staffed and bust your ass for a year!

Any new grad hired as a Staff Nurse at OSU must go through residency. It's just a 4 hour meeting once a month.

Heartnursing3 not everybody goes thru that new grad program!! AND.HEY HEADS UP EVERYBODY OSU DOES HIRE NIRSES WITH ASSOCIATE DEGREES AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE EXPERIENCE TO BACK YOU!!! Anyone reading this post pleasr dont get discouraged woth the whole ADN/BSN thing. Whatever degree one decides to get make shure u are the best nurse u can be! And PLEASE dont listen to everyone who MAY sound lik they kno whats goin on becuz some ppl dont.

No, not everyone goes through residency. But all new grads do. I was hired as a new grad outside of the residency and 2 months before the next residency was due to start. They still had to plug me into a slighter older residency - I missed the first few months and will have to go back and finish them up after the fact with a new hiring class.

I was hired as an ADN nurse. So yes, they still do hire ADN nurses. It's just not common. You generally have to know someone, already be in the system, or have one heck of a resume. I both knew someone and was already in the system. However, they did require me to promptly start a RN-BSN program.

It isn't true that OSU only hires new grads through the Residency program!! I started out at OSU in August 2012 and just left my job there (to relocate to PA). I was never in the Residency program. I did have to attend monthly new grad classes (which, sadly, were not worth the time). In my year there my unit hired several new grads! It helps if you know someone - ANYONE - who can help put your name in the manager's ear. I went to Mt. Carmel for nursing school and many of my classmates took jobs with them. Within the first year SO many of them switched to OSU! The pay and benefits can't be beat. I'm disappointed moving to PA because I will make only 70% as an experienced nurse here as I did as a new grad there. I LOVED WORKING FOR OSU!!!

So did you guys just apply to an opening then? I only ask because I am up here in Cleveland and I would definitely move to Columbus if I were able to get a job at OSU.
