I don't know if any of you remember the post I made a few weeks ago about a young pregnant woman with an etopic pregnancy who was left to writh in pain in her jail cell, until she died. Well apparently the mistreatment of inmates continues.

Today another article appeared about the "nurses" lack of care to inmates in Syracuse. Check this out:http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2010/06/refugee_who_fled_war_in_africa.html

I just can't fathom this inattention to sick, injured people. I posted here due to posting the first article in this forum. Apparently this incident happened before the inmate with an etopic pregnancy.

This article has video of the "care" he recieved.

That video was hard to watch...

I feel bad for the inmate...and wonder what happened leading up to the moment it starts getting filmed....?

I took care of so many prisoners over the years in our hospital. This seems unfathomable but obviously does happen.

the method of injury itself is irrelevant.

the presence of the spit hood and restraint belt hint that he was probably not being cooperative going to court and was getting restrained - it's easy to get an injury like that when you are combatting 4 or 5 grown men.

The eyebrow raiser for me was the nurse's assessment - no touching it, no real assessment of the injury - just "it's swollen and bruised". This to me would be one of those CYA situations where i'd at least take more than a passing glance. Of course, this is just my interpertation of what i saw. It's hard to fully assess what went on based on that 2 minute clip. And it doesn't speak for what's going on off camera.

The thing that just astounds me is the fact that the mans arm is injured, all can see that by looking at the short video clip. Also, I looked up the nurse in questions license, it is valid with no discipline. The video clearly shows that the nurse gave little attention to the injured man. I just can't believe that this is any kind of good nursing care.

I tend to keep my opinions to myself, but allowing a patient to die from the complications of an ectopic pregnancy on my watch would weigh heavily on my soul and I'd really fear the bad karma. It's unbelievably sad, very painful, I just hope it brings attention to the rights of the prisoner. *Steps off soapbox*

She needs to lose her license. She should be embarrassed that non-medical personnel could look at his arm and tell he had a severe injury but she couldn't be bothered to do her job. Her obvious lack of skill and care is an affront to the profession and there is no defending her actions.

I agree with Sharon

I think that this nurse is most likely incompetent but maybe there isn't enough information from this video to determine what actually happened. A quick glance at an injury doesn't seem like the right thing to do in any situation. I also wonder if she has had any bad expiriences with this inmate and was irritated with him or maybe even afraid of him.

You don't need to be a nurse (or other trained medical professional) to see in the video that this man is obviously injured pretty seriously and is in a lot of pain. While the jail blamed it on the "langauge barrier", that doesn't excuse them ignoring the universal signs of distress/pain this man showed...sickening.

All I can say is OMG. This injury did not require a nurse or any other trained medical professional to see that this man had a severe injury. This nurse should lose her license..period. The video speaks volumes. You could see in the in the guards eyes/responses. This is negligence....horrifying.

I live very near by syracuse and all I have to say is SYRACUSE IS NOT A GREAT PLACE AT ALL. Racism is very big issue whether male or female. Im a young black female ( born and raised )who graduated as an Lpn last year and i have expericenced this personally. I hate, hate ,hate Syracuse. The police officers here harrass everyone that lives in the city of Syracuse and harass everyone who's from the city and goes through the suburbs. I noticed when I was alittle younger ( teens)that when I was pullled over by " SYRACUSE'S FINEST"I was spoken to as if I was unintelligent and an older adult.

Syracuse has a very bad name for itself and everyone tries to cover it up with SU and the new mall their trying to bulid "to create jobs" please. My mom and I fear for my younger brother who is a young black male. He's quiet and intelligent but he has also experienced rasicm at a very young age. I feel like im growing up back in the era my mom did and its very scary. My mom use to support Syracuse Police by giving donations when they sent out envelops in the mail and I use to get so mad at her but she always had a big heart. But in my eyes these were the say men and women that harrassed her son, daughter, and her. Im leaving as soon as possible.

That nurse needs her license suspended without a doubt. That was a very disgusting assesment/judgement whatever made on her part. I know what that man did was'nt right what so ever but nobody, nobody deserves to be in pain throughout a trial w/ a judge. Medical 1st. He was cleary in pain. And if they were so afraid that he was a threat, they could have sedated him. Come On Now!!!!!!
