The Circumcision Discussion

Specialties Ob/Gyn

I know this can be a HUGE debate, and I'm not looking to start any arguments. I was just wondering as you are OB nurses. I'm expecting a boy in July and not sure if we should circ. or not. My husband says yes, it's better medically in the long run. My gpa who just turned 70 had to have a circ. due to endless complications lately.

As nurses in this area, is the medication that they use good? And what are some questions to ask my Dr. about it. I already know that my hospital i'll be at uses a med. when they perform it, I"m just wondering what you all think.

Thanks

Jen :)

I am glad to say my boys have all their boby parts that they were born with one day the USA will wake up and the truth will be out the population (who I do not blaim) have been brain washed into circs because it makes money last year 4.1 million babies were born in the usa - say half were boys and 90% get circ @ 120$ approx a snip got work it out - circ has nothing to do with anything except the cash made from it. Every single year this money is made imagine the loss in revinue if circ stopped. The truth is it is a violation in the human rights of a child - but nothing is done about it.

ITA, but try ~$400 a snip. My son also has all his body parts- thank goodness my British ex-pat friend was pregnant with a boy at the same time I was and we talked about it.

..... They both said they would be very unhappy with me if they were not circ'd.

I think it has to do with where you grow up - there was only one boy not circ'd here and he got teased.

If it was the reverse, they would probably change their mind. Or not.

But my adult sons are glad they were circ'd. The don't want their foreskins back.:clown:

I'll have to wait on the 6 year old - he has no idea yet.:coollook:

Admittedly there was only one boy not circ'd in my gym class in high school and the other kids made his life a living hell but it still dosen't change the fact that I wish medical society/society in general would not have pressured my parents and EVERYONE elses parents to get thier little boys' members trimmed.

Even so, I have to say that my boys are still adamant that they do not want their foreskins back and don't think it is a big deal and wish their mom would stop asking them questions about this. . . . :D

LOL. the use of condoms with or with out forskin........STD's, with or without forskin......This may sound harsh......but if you cut it off or leave it on.......AIDS and STDS still live. It is more about what you do with it, than what you have. That is the bottom line.

Did you grow up in Northeast Ohio? Those of us who were uncircumcised were in the minority, but I was certainly not the only one. I was picked on a bit because I was unathletic, but not because I was uncircumcised. Back in my day, anyone paying that kind of attention to another boy's genitals would have had their sexual orientation questioned. Remember that prior to 1973, homosexuality was considered a disorder by the American Psychiatric Association.

I'm sure it's much the same now. Every guy I've asked about it has said that looking at another dude's 'junk' is grounds for a butt kicking! :D

NO doubt!- I don't think I would have wanted my mother chatting with me endlessly about my foreskin (or lack there of) either!

Hard core southern Florida bible belt. The assumption was that he wasn't "quite a normal guy" with that odd looking member, and by default, somehow that ended up provoking questions about his sexual orientation. It would have been good to have such things covered in "health class" but it wasn't like the coach was going to ask him to whip it out in front of the rest of the guys to provide for instruction. I and my peers didn't even know that we were circ'd- the subject just wasn't talked about, and all our parts looked the same. Keep in mind this was the earily 70's and NO ONE was uncirc'd. It wasn't that we were compairing equipment as a hobby but in Florida you had to shower after gym class and the difference was glaring. Kids can be very cruel when someone looks different and homophobia was more rampant in that time than it ever was for my kids.

I always wondered about this too. My husband and I had the discussion about how he would get made fun of in the locker room if we did not have our son circ'd. I found it unbelievable that the teen/pre-teen boy crowd would admit that they had been scrutinizing that closely someone else's member. He is only two so we don't know yet, but I figure if he is going to get made fun of for not being circ'd that will save him from being made fun of for something else. Kids are kids and will tease for something.

I also told THIS story before . . .but boys look at each other's "junk" from a young age out of curiosity . . .

My son and his friend, both age 5, were at the fairgrounds with us and both had to pee so my husband took them in to the bathroom and as they were peeing they both looked and my son's friend said "your member is bigger than mine". :chuckle

One of my adult sons, when he was about 4, and my husband were out getting firewood and they both had to pee so over by a tree they went and my son looked over at Dad and said "Boy Dad, you're a really good pee'er". :D

At dinner at friends, their 4 year old had to pee so Dad got up and took him to the bathroom. 4 year old returned first and sat down and said "Did you know my Dad has a really BIG member?".

During potty training - paying attention to the member is a big deal. Peeing off the porch is fun too. Peeing in left field during t-ball has been known to happen.

Kids look - it is normal.

Ah, my poor boys . . I'm the kind of mom who talked to them about wet dreams and masturbation and STD's (complete with poster-sized photos from the Health Dept.) and pregnancy prevention and treating women with respect, etc.

My husband on the other hand cannot say "member" . . it is "tallywacker".
