SEVERE hot flashes at 30 yrs old

I know you guys cant be sure whats going on with me and I hate to ask for advice but I have severe hot flashes, almost daily, sometimes lasting a good half hour to 45 minutes. I've tried telling 3 different DR's about it but none will do anything about it because I'm only 30. Have you all seen anyone my age start with perimen/menopause. And what about these OTC menopause kits do they reeally detect if you are starting to go thru it. My periods are normal and I do not take any hormones BCP's etc...

Any one have any ideas why I feel like I'm burning up and sweating to death all the time. I sometimes even wake up in the morning soaking wet. If its not perimen what the heck could it be. All bloodwork was normal TSH etc...

At 32, I am crowned the oldest woman on my mother's side of the family who has not completed going through menopause. All others in that line were early, my mom was complete by 29, my aunt by age 25. I started perimenopause at 17 with the hotflashes. Eventually I became so irregular (and had other major issues) that I had a hysterectomy and one ovary removed...I thought I didn't want to take hormones. Silly me. The moods and flashes are worse now for me. I'm looking on the bright side, though. This probably means I'm gettin' close to done. WooHoo! :rotfl:

I agree with others, you should check with an endocrinologist for a very thorough check up. It still might be thyroid. Some people need a series study to track fluctuations and trending can be caught that way.

Good luck.

Thank you all. I normally see a NP each year for my pap. I will see about going to a endocrine gyn. I am so tired of being miserable all the time.

I had blood work done about 2 months ago and all was normal. Sugar was good, TSH normal etc.. I do have high blood pressure. I've been on Sectral 200mg daily for 2 years now and my BP is controlled very well. I do take Zoloft but have for several years, the hotness/hot flashes have only been going on for about a year. I'm going to get the OTC test and see what it tells me and also make an Appt with the DOC. Thanks again for all the advice:nurse:

Just curious... you aren't taking HCTZ are u? (water pill). My DH does (& so does my best friend) and they both sweat like crazy! This is a side-effect... just a thought! I thought I would ask b/c u mentioned BP pills & it's common for dr's to prescribe these w/bp pills.

You seem to young for those hot flashes, but maybe you can try the tips from all the other experienced posters and hopefully they can get better. Best wishes to you.

Princess74.........ask your doctor if the TSH level showed a specific level of what your thyroxine was at that time. I had more than a few TSH levels drawn over a period of one year that were all coming back "normal" until the last time I had my TSH checked (by a PA...not a DR). The PA found my thyroxine level was out of wack, put me on Cytomel 5mcg (which I've been on daily for three months) and the symptoms I thought were menopausal are now all gone. :)

I also had a complete hormone panel -- twice in the past year -- both proved that I was not menopausal...yet...those aren't fool proof test either because being the women that we are :uhoh3: our hormones fluctuate too much to acquire an accurate test. There are only a few days in our monthly cycle when the test will prove to be most accurate, and your gyn will inform you of those days. It's an expensive test, so your doctor will have to come up with a "proper diagnosis or suspicion" to even get most insurance companies to pay for it.

With menopause.........the age range at which women enter menopause is pretty much set on when our mothers, their sisters, and our maternal grandmother went through menopause. I've known women to enter menopause as early as the age of 32. In my own maternal line of women, menopause happens around mid-fifties to early sixties, so I'm approaching those years already (being that I'm 53). My oldest sister is 56 and says she is just beginning to notice "body temperature fluctuations"...a nice way of saying "hot flashes" and "cold droughts". :rotfl:

I also drink Silk Soymilk, and take Celexa...so that cold quite easily stay off some of the symptoms.

No I am not on HCTZ.

I have had my TSH levels checked at least 7 or 8 times in the past 3-4 years but I will ask about the specific levels.

I am only working PT now because of school, so I have no health ins. Which totally sucks!!!!

Glad to hear that I am not the only one this young with these problems. I hope we all get some relief soon. Before we melt.lol

Seriously though I do worry that there is a problem with me that has not been caught as of yet. I hope all it is, is peri-meno. So far everytime I see a DR they tell me its probably just stress. I do have Panic Attacks but I don't think that should account for me having such severe hot flashes so often. Who knows though? Even if I'm not burning up hot I stay extra warm 24/7. My boyfriend says my thermostat is broken. I think he's right.

I am now 35 and have been post menopausal for 3yrs...officially. It all started with hotflashes....that got me to the doctor....well and my periods were like q 3mos. My labs (fsh, lh) cont to show postmenopausal..and i have been with out a period for 3yrs now.....I tried HRT but didnt like the side effects (made my chest feel heavy)...I am on prozac for depression which luckily helps with the hotflashes.....WHICH is my only complaint....otherwise its awesome............(I had my kids young otherwise it could have been an issue)

You need to be more specific about your symptoms. The fact that your periods are normal makes premature ovarian failure less likely.

A pheochromocytoma can also cause sx as you describe but you would also see elevated BP, tachycardia, sweating, etc. You need to check your TSH first, if that is ok, then LH/FSH (r/o POF) and finally urine catecholamines to see if an adrenal tumor may be there.

I am sooo glad that I'm not the only one who is young and getting hot flashes. I'm 25 (26 in Dec) and have been having hot flashes for years. My periods were so out of control that my gyn put me on BCP and I've been taking them for 7 years. I have heard from other nurses that if you have acid reflux that that can sometimes cause hot flashes. I've had a complete thyroid work up and everything is normal. I get them so bad that I seriously think I might go crazy. All I want to do is shove my face in a bucket of ice. Just recently started having horrible, horrible hives everywhere--even my tongue began to swell. Anyway, dr. ran ANA test and found that mine was astronomically high. He said that with hot flashes, hives and elevated ANA could indicate lupus. Which is just wonderful 'cause I already have Crohn's, what's another autoimmune disorder? I think I also want rheumatoid arthritis and grave's for Christmas:)

BTW does anyone know the normal range for ANA?

When would Menopause occurs when women stop having periods...? And, If they occur long after menopause when it begins could it be signal for blood vessel abnormality or that could also affect the heart? plz clear my this...
