I want some advice on ob/gyn

My name is Sarah and I am in my sophmore year of highschool. I want to become an ob/gyn nurse. I was just wondering if any of you had some advice on where to start as far as good schools, taking the right courses etc........ Any information would be helpful an very very much apperciated.

Welcome to the boards! i suggest you look into local universities or colleges that have nursing programs for this. You obviously have to go to NURSING school first before becoming an OB/GYN nurse. As you near graduation, make sure you have taken SAT's and gotten the best grades you can. Visit prospective universities/colleges and find out what courses you will need to take BEFORE they will admit you to nursing school. Take steps to get these done first THEN apply. You will need classes like English 101/102, Algebra, Speech, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, History, Government.....many basics. Get these and your electives knocked out then apply.

It may help to shadow a nurse in the area of your interest to see what you think....ask questions and be a sponge, observing EVERYthing. Good luck to you!!!!!

Just wanted to tell you that you can take some of the prereqs at a community college at the age of 16..I"ve seen it done...Also if you do have a community college near by call and talk with them about possibably doing this during the summer would help to get some of the preqres done sooner...good luck!:)

I have been an OB nurse for two years now, graduating from a University with a bachelors degree. First thing I want to tell you, because noone ever told me in high school, is that you can be an RN with just an associates degree (2-year degree from a tech school). For the most part bachelor's degrees (4 years) are only good for management. Both associate degree and bachelor degree RNs get paid the same wages and take the same boards...even if you want a bachelors degree at least you would be earning RN wages for the last two years of college. Also, it helped me immensly with school by becoming a nursing assistant. I took the class the summer after high school graduation and worked very part-time through college. You will find that the knowledge you acquire on the hospital floors will help you much with your studies and the RNs are always helpful and wanting to help you learn. Hi Sarah - welcome!

I'd like to give another perspective from an older nurse. I would suggest that since you are young and have no other responsibilities, you should go for the BSN. Make the most of your education and enjoy college for the college experience and not just hurry and get your nursing degree.

I started out as a Social Work major after high school and life intervened and I had to drop out with a year to go. Then came marriage, kids, responsibilities. I went back to school for an AA Degree in Nursing in my late 30's and the truth is it is very very difficult to go to school when you have children. My personal experience is that my kids suffered and my marriage suffered because nursing school takes alot of time and focus.

Get your degree while you are young. Before you fall in love and you start making decisions with your heart and not your head.

Think of college not just as an avenue to nursing but to the big wide world. Take some classes not related to nursing at all. Get involved in campus activities. You are about to start on a great adventure. Have fun.

I am with Steph - go for the BSN now if you are at all interested in that.

Around here, by the time you take all the prerequisites, you will have attended for 3 years anyway - so why not do one more and have a bachelor's degree if you can? Never know, maybe you will decide you want a management position, or maybe you'll decide to get a Master's degree or teach nursing. Or maybe for some reason you could end up wanting some other job that just requires a 4 year degree (there are a lot of jobs that don't require an specific Bachelor's - just any field with a check in the 4 year degree block, dumb, probably, but a fact of life). Lots more flexibility.

I just met an RN today who worked in L&D and loved it, wanted to become a nurse-midwife but never did because she didn't have her BSN and didn't want to have to do that plus the nurse-midwifery schooling at this point in her life. Just a good example of why you may want to consider a higher goal since the world is your oyster right now ;)

I agree with those that say to get the bsn in the beginning, you never know what you may want to do in the future. College is fun when you are younger...(at least it was for me!)...

Also, not to push you out of ob/gyn as it is a great field, but go into nursing school with all of you options open, don't be set on one place right from the beginning. I too wanted to ob/gyn right out of school and I ended up in a cardiac critical care unit, and I love it! There are so many great places that you can work it, why limit yourself in the beginning? If you do decided to go for ob/gyn after you go through your clinicals and see other areas, you know you are where your heart is at. Good luck in your decisions, and don't forget to have fun!

Hey Alicia I am still in highschool too. I also wrote to the board for advice on this and it was pretty helpful. The only thing I can tell you is some things other people told me. Make sure you do well on your SAT's and start looking at schools that you might be interested in now. Try and get some prereqs out of the way now because that is less you have to do later. I don't know about your school but at my high school we can go to tech school for half a day junior and senior year. I am going to take a class nex year and probably my senior year. This is enough to go into an entry level nursing job when I get done. I don't know if this is a good thing or not because like I said I am still in high school as well.
