I had my first delivery

Today at work. The patient had a history of quick deliveries so I thought it would be prudent to bring everything in as soon as I got in and boy am I glad I did. She went from 4-10 in less then 10 minutes. I hit the emergency bell for extra hands as the head was already out. My adrenaline kicked in and I was just hoping not to have cord around the neck or have the shoulders get stuck. The baby delivered nicely and the doctor walked in about 2 minutes after the delivery.

I have come close to having to deliver countless time but usually the doctor walks in as the baby is crowning or a more senior nurse steps in to deliver the baby. It was very exciting and thankfully the parents said they never would have known I'd never done this before. That was my excitement for the night.

L&D is where I want to be when I finish school. I can imagine your excitement. What an awesome experience. :yeah:

Congratulations! What an awesome story! Thanks for sharing it. I will be a unit secretary in the Maternity department of a local hospital while I attend nursing school. I hope that I'll be able to witness a live birth or assist in one. Just not with me as the patient! :)

A few of our unit secretaries double as nursing students. I think most of our SN/secretaries have probably seen and been involved in more deliveries than I ever have:) Best of luck in your new job. L&D is truly the best.

What is an IP?

Congrats! It's my dream to deliver a baby before the doctor has a chance to get there. I get so excited just thinking about delivering a baby! It must have been amazing!
