Cord Clamping

Was curious from the cord clamping discussion in the birth plan thread. So did a little search... for anyone interested http://www.cordclamping.com/

Which reminds me.... I was watching "birthday" on discovery health (gasp):imbar and I saw a midwife delay cutting the cord on a stressed baby... rationale: The placenta was still supplying oxygen to the baby.

Kinda Interesting,

Paula

VERY interesting!! I had no idea! Thanks for the link and the information! Amazing bodies we are born with huh?

You've got to be kidding me???? IF all this is true, why does it go against everything we're taught and everything we do.....does anyone know of any place that performs resucitation of a baby at the bedside BEFORE the cord is clamped?? HOw many babies have you seen become jaundiced after waiting 10-20 minutes to clamp the cord? I'm thouroughly confused, somebody please enlighten me.

That's what I thought too shelley, about the jaundice. I was under the impression that if the cord was left too long unclamped, that the babies can get too much blood and become jaundiced. On the other hand, I know of cultures that dont cut the cord at all.. just carry the placenta around with the baby until the cord falls off...eww

Cord clamping causes autism? I thought the MMR vaccine did that! Jeez, we're all doomed no matter what aren't we?

Doesn't everything cause autism?;) Another ridiculous claim without any real scientific study...

 GASP! Then I am destined for that!!!

We left our last baby's cord unclamped until the placenta was delivered and it had stopped pulsating, and she is the ONLY one of our kids who has not been jaundiced. Not a trace of it, not even the whites of her eyes. I know it's anecdotal, but I'd like to see the studies that show bad outcomes from jaundice in all those countries that practice delayed cord clamping.

As for the thought that this goes against everything you have been taught: The medical community used to be taught that second stage had to occur within a completely sterile field, hence routine enemas and shaves. Doctors used to be taught that episiotomies were necessary routinely to prevent head trauma to the baby and to "protect" the pelvic floor from relaxing. Within my lifetime, we've gone from "Once a cesaerian, always a cesaerian," to VBAC, and now many docs are wanting to return to once a c, always a c for everyone.

Anyway, don't throw something out just because it isn't the norm. There's a lot the medical community can still learn.

I see what you're saying keeper, but this just seems extreme, saying that early cord clamping causes autism. I'd like to hear more about scientific research of this topic, hard true facts are what I believe.....I just want whatever is best for the patients and their babies and i want to be able to help them make informed decisions.

If you read the "study" on that link, it says that the possibility of this being linked with autism needs to be studied. It is just a hypothesis, nothing more. This is even less credible than the "study" linking the MMR vaccine to autism. Once you look into the details you find out how stupid and irresponsible it is to be disseminating those hypotheses as facts.

That said, I haven't found any studies testing whether or not jaundice is increased by not clamping the cord. The problem with OB is that they can never really set up studies comparing the 2 because of the possible harm to babies.

We always wait till the cord doesn'T pulsate any more. No more jaundices as 10 years ago, better though, even less!

As for the autisme: one word for that "thesis": bull!
