Hello all!

Can anyone help me figure out what my take home salary would be as a band 5 nurse with roughly 5 years experience in critical care in Aberdeen, Scotland?

Trying to figure out how much rent I would be able to afford in combination with other bills.

Salary scales in Scotland are different to England. They can both be found here Pay rates 2015-16 - RCN

You say will be on Band 5 but you don't say where you have gained your 5 years experience. If it is in the NHS then you will go onto the equivalent scale but if you are coming from US then you will fit in wherever HR/pay office decide to put you. This may be the bottom of the scale.

Aberdeen can be an expensive city to find accommodation due to the oil industry. I can't give you figures as I don't live in Aberdeen. Try here for some costs of buying and renting https://www.aspc.co.uk/ There is always someone around the hospital looking to rent out a flat or share a house.

Figure on having slightly less than 1 third of your salary taken away for tax, national insurance and superannuation. That will give you an idea on your take home pay. Remember, you get paid extra for working unsocial hours and weekends.

Agree with Silverdragon, as a staff nurse you are on Band 5.

Remember, salaries are relative to your country. AVERAGE salary in UK is about £26,500 pa. So a staff nurse starts below that but ends up above it after a few years. Plus of course that is basic salary, you get more for weekend working and for nights.
