I know I am not yet a nurse but.

Hi

I know I am not yet a nurse. I am about to start my training. However I was concerned to read that Nursing Midwifery Council is considering an increase to their annual fee from £100 to £120.

The NMC is the largest register of health care professional worldwide. At this time it has over 670,000. With that number people must take action on the fee increases.

Now there is a petition on the United Kingdom Government Number ten website. It is said that "This e-petition remains open to signatures and will be considered for debate by the Backbench Business Committee should it pass the 100 000 signature threshold."

Also Parliament is supposed to debate all petitions should they pass 100 000 signatures. So please sign this petition. At the time of writing the petition has [COLOR=#231f20]97,469 signatures. Please help us do better and sign it if you have not already.

Thanks you

hello azalight90, good luck with your training, I'm not sure exactly what it is that you object to ? is it the extra 38p per week ?

There is a few things:

1.Expecting nurses and midwifes to pay £120 a year just to work. There has been a pay freeze

2.Registration fees of £120 would be an increase of almost 60% over two years

3.In 2012 it attempted to increase the registration fee from £76 to £120. But with a £20m government grant, the regulator opted to increase it to £100 in February 2013

4. Why should we pay more than in other parts of the world? When you consider

Australia they pay: £88.81

Florida they pay £ 48.06

The money has be accurately converted

Here in Canada we pay well over $500 A year for the privilege of working

thanks for the clarification azalight90, I just wasn't sure what the objection was to; some nurses don't agree with the NMC at all, some would happily pay more if they (NMC) would only get their act together, some would like to go the way of the suggestion on the DOH website of letting the employer, for example, a Trust, making the decision about what kind of training they require their nurses to have in future and in so doing become the regulator....what do others think ? is there a point to regulation ? I must admit I think there is a lot to be said to being accountable to an outside regulator rather than having all eggs in one basket and depending on an employer, as all employers aren't of the same standards, as we well know

Every professional pays fees to a regulatory body. Between union dues and permit fees I spend close to $1000 Cdn. per year. For this I get union coverage and .

Look into what the malpractice insurance fees are for a nurse in Florida, they aren't covered in the yearly registration!

Yes, yes i am objecting to 38p a week extra. If the government want us governing with a body then they should stick their short arms in their long pockets and make it happen. No one should pay to go to work. we do this already its called tax. I am sick of this oooohhhhhh i didnt become a nurse for the money rubbish, well you work for free then.

well done though. 98500 sigs so far. not many to go before it gets discussed in court and raised instead of just being raised.

I would be interested to see the running costs and assets of the NMC.

Its a huge building in central London, and you have to wonder in these days of online communication whether they can justify this.

It bugs me to see charities with downtown London addresses too, a lot of the major charities have offices around Holborn, etc, likely one of the most expensive business addresses in the world.

I wonder how many people realise that when they respond to someone rattling a collecting tin at them?

absolutely right skylark. grrrrrr gets my hackles up.

I agree Fiona 59, we all have to pay, not sure what the conversion rate is but I pay £296.80 currently per year, that gets me professional registration and professional indemnity for a million. That would go up to £316.80 with the increase - that's 26.40 pm, less than a pound a day.....personally I don't think that that is bad, would you object less if they didn't have an office in a fancy location ? or is the value for money? what else would you like to see them do for the money ? or is that you have to pay it at all ?

We don't get any indemnity insurance from the NMC, its the responsibility of the nurse to arrange that separately. We get professional registration and that's it really.

Thanks guys we have gone over the hundred thousand signatures. At this exact moment of posting there is 100,017

As of now it is rising at a steady speed. In about fives it has gone from 100,017 to 100,022
