Study tips from 1st semester nursing student

Published

I had just started my first semester in August and the months has flown by. Grocery and meal prep on sunday, so the rest of the week you can focus on your school work. DON'T study at home. Even if you live alone you will find other things to do like laundry or dishes. Only study for a max of 2 hours at a time then walk away from the book take a 10 min break, then repeat to yourself what just studied.

SOOOOOO TRUE!!!!! I find myself not studying when I am at home. Definitely get out if you can!

Not a nursing student (yet) but this is very helpful. thank you

Thanks for this tip. I'm going to nursing school this Fall so definitely in need of some good tips!

When I was doing my pre-reqs I studied for hours straight without breaks due to my concentration; however, I know nursing school is going to be different since every school I've interviewed at told me their exams is set up like the NCLEX.

Thank you for the tip!! I start my program next month and I am starting to get nervous. I am looking forward to reading and digesting as many tips as I can!

My suggestion and what helped me out the most was that I spent no more than 3 hours a day studying or working on assignments and homework. There is an endless amount of information in nursing and in the medical field in general. Focus on the basics, fundamentals, and getting through nursing school, you can iron out all the small details as you go along in your career. You will overwhelm yourself and burn out quickly if you don't put a limit on yourself, and enjoy those around you. We all want to be the best nurse we can be, but we also have to mindful that nursing is a life career not just the 2-3 yrs of nursing school. Hope this helps.

There are a lot of resources available nowadays too. There's a good free app on the mobile stores to help you with pharm, labs, and diagnostics if you need help with that. Check it out, its called NCLEX Nursing Tools or the website nclexessentials.barcalabs.com. Best of luck.
