Hi! I am currently taking Healthcare Informatics. One of my assignments is to interview someone who has experience in informatics or clinical health information systems. Please feel free to answer one or all of the questions. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I may or may not be in those fields. I might also be a 67-year old 437 lb leper living in the colonies of Indonesia with a pinky toe fetish. Thankfully my mom doesn't mind me still living in the basement. She's 102 and has Alzheimer's. I'm pretty sure she doesn't remember who I am, which makes for awkward pooping time.

We get these requests a lot, so if there are any other students out there who might get this kind of assignment, listen up:

Part of your faculty's reason for giving you this assignment is to get you to go out there and speak to an RN face to face. A big email blast is not a substitute for shoe leather. AN is not Google.

See, in nursing, you have to learn to speak to a lot of people you would not otherwise encounter; you might find yourself out of your comfort zone. This is part of nursing, a huge part. An anonymous respondent online, well, you don't really know who we are, do you? We could be the truck driving guy living next door for all you know.

So if all you do about learning new things is "Go to the keyboard and hit send," then you are limiting your chances of actual learning a valuable skill you will need all your working life.

That said: Where will you find a nurse? Think outside the (computer) box.

Local hospital: go to the staff development/inservice education office and ask one of them. They value education and will be happy to chat or to hook you up with someone who is.

Go to the public health department downtown. Ditto.

Go to the local school and ask to speak to a school nurse. Ditto.

Go to a local clinic / physician/NP office. Ditto.

Go to the local jail and ask to speak to the nurse there. Ditto.

Notice all of these say, "Go to..." and not "Email..." Remember that part about meeting new people face to face and comfort zone.

What is your current position and what job duties does it include?

I am currently an EPIC analyst and I have been part of two go-lives. I am part of the team that built the cardiology portion.

What does a typical work day or work week look like?

I work Mon-Fri 7-3. I spend most of my day building or updating on my computer. Sometimes I work from home and other times I have lots of meetings.

What kind of institution do you work for? (You do not need to state the name of your organization if you are uncomfortable about it.)

I work for a major hospital system in a large metropolitan city.

What is your prior experience?

I was an ICU nurse for many years but had some experience with desktop publishing and web design. My position required prior cardiology experience so as to have an understanding of the documentation needs.

What certifications do your currently hold? Are there any certifications you are currently working on?

I hold three certifications but two are nothing to do with informatics. I have a CCRN and a CDN and I am certified in Epic Cupid Systems.

If so, what are they and how will they help you in your field of work?

They helped me get my current job as they showed a willingess to learn and take on extra knowledge. My company were looking for someone with cardiology experience and so the CCRN helped. I did not have Epic experienc eprior to this job and my company paid for me to get certified in Epic.

What is the education requirement for your current position? What degrees do you currently hold? Are you continuing your education, if so, what are you working towards?

It was a requirement that I had a BSN, which I did. I am now in grad school pursuing a Master's degree and am in my second year. I am in the Acute Adult Nurse Practitioner Program at my state school.

Is continuing education/certification require for your current position, if so, what are they?

It is only required that I stay current with my Epic certification but we are encouraged to continue with education. A degree in informatics has not been necessary and I don't know anyone in my department that has one.

What is the future outlook on your current position?

The future looks bright! Informatics is growing and growing and there is a never ending stream of work to do. There are constant updates and changes and therefore lots of tweaking.

What do you hope to achieve?

I am actually aiming to be an APRN and not stay in informatics. I graduate in 2017.

OP, you cannot verify credentials for anyone on this website. No disrespect intended to the person who did answer your questions, but.....you cannot know with any degree of certainty that anyone answering you is not a deluded hairstylist who failed out of nursing school or a CNA who believes he is just as "qualified" to answer these questions as the actual nurse. For perspective, I will tell you that I recently learned that a neighbor of mine, very sweet little lady, more confused than not, often tells people she was a doctor and "prescribes treatment" for various complaints of her friends. Problem is, she was never a doctor...she was a home health aide (YEARS ago) according to her daughter. Tad bit of difference ;). And if she had access to a computer, would have no trouble responding to your request :D
