Please be more specific as to what type of info you need to learn about. Treatment? Diagnosis? Nursing interventions? S/Sx? Meds?

I have to learn the disorder in the whole.

Try reading your Med-surg text book section on mental illness/depression. Try also reading your psych text book sections on the topic.

If you have specific questions, that demonstrate you've attempted to gain information on your own, first, then someone may help.

Not to be snarky, but as has been said on AN many times before, we won't do your homework for you.

Please do some independent research and get back to us.

I wasnt asking anyone to do my homework for me at all. I am studying my mental illness book and there is so much information that I HAVE READ I was just wondering if some information was more important than others. When I made my note cards I didn't know exactly how to sum up depreasion so I came here for insight. I understand that depression is because decreased levels of serotnin and norepinehrine. And so depending on where we lack we take either ssri's or snri's and so on. Again I was looking on insight as in dont forget to look at this or that not someone to do my homework for me

I have to say this comment made me upset one because I study everyday and this being my first time here was rude. I ventured out from just my class and professor seeing if someone else could help me minimize so much information thrown at me at one time and you took it as me not studying or wanting to do my homework and such is not the case.

Please don't be upset! If you are a regular on AN, you'll see that commonly requests are made for help and that per the TOS, we do not simply give answers without seeing that the OP has done initial research.

You mentioned that you are aware that depression is thought to be caused by decreased seratonin and decreased dopamine secretion and that's why Selective Seratonjn ReUptake Inhibitors and Norepinephrine Dopamine ReUptake Inhibitors are prescribed.

There are also MAOIs, Atypical Antidepressants,, as well as other classes of anti depressant meds. Learn the broad categories of meds.

People who have any MI, including Depression should be screened for suicidal ideation and treated accordingly. This was a big deal in my work as a psych nurse as well as in nursing school. You must be Able to screen for safety and implement precautions accordingly.

Also, learn the common side effects for each class of drugs.

The side effects range from expected, i.e. Decreased libido / sexual dysfunction to adverse i.e. EPS.

I hope this helps!

Feel free to come back and ask us more specific questions!!

Nothing I read in response was rude. The question you ask is so vague as to it cannot be answered. You ask for a "few points on what to remember for depression"? The question is not clear. Are you saying symptoms? causes? treatments? Are you asking about medications? anti-depressants? Are you asking about NCLEX questions?

Thanks I hava made note cards for the meds including the maoi's, tcas, atypicals, and so on. It looks like from your response I am on the right track. Sorry to be so vague I didn't need to ask a single question more reassurance.

Guess I'm being sensitive I am in the mental health course for six weeks so much information is being thrown at us. I needed someone to say what I was thinking to reassure myself I was on right track. Right now I dont have a specific question sorry.

I understand that depression is because decreased levels of serotnin and norepinehrine.

That is the theory du jour. We have no idea if that is what actually causes depression, and we'll probably never have a definitive answer.
