Available: acetaminophen elixir 160mg/5ml. How much acetaminophen will you administer?

Think of it this way:

1) Order: Dose per kg of body weight

2) Weight in pounds converts to weight in kg.

3) Compute total dose... a 1 kg kid would get 10 mg... a 3 kg kid would get 30 mg... how 'bout this kid?

if 1 kg kid = 10 mg dose then [this kid's weight] kg = ? mg dose

4) Now that you have the total dose ordered, consider how many mL contain that dose...

if 5 mL = 160 mg then ? mL = [total dose] mg

Available: acetaminophen elixir 160mg/5ml. How much acetaminophen will you administer?

First step = convert child's weight in pounds to kg.

Second step = determine child's dose my multiplying mg/kg/dose by child's weight in kg

Third step = Use the dose determined in step 2 to figure out the correct volume of acetaminophen to administer when it is dispensed as 160 mg/5 mL.
