Beginning Med-Surg Clinicals in the Telemetry Unit - Tips?

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

Hi! In my program, we are not doing the cardio portion of Med-Surg until the very end, so I haven't gotten to that portion of the course that would probably be most useful to me in the unit where I have clinicals - the telemetry unit.

I'd like to see if I can look up a few things that will help me out in the meantime during clinicals - how to read those strips with heart rhythms, I learned how to take measurement of oxygen saturation, but I'm not sure what else I should be looking into. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Like tele unit, know about the cardiac enzymes and their parameters, heart and disorders. Critical thinking is very important and remember to do vital signs before administering certain medication. Do apical pulse before administering digoxin, and those beta blockers do blood pressure monitoring. There many other things you need to take in consideration. I will be doing cardio in august which will be my last class before preceptorship.

information on how students can read telemetry (ekg) strips is on post #39 of this sticky thread: https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/any-good-iv-127657.html - any good iv therapy or nursing procedure web sites

how to read and interpret abgs is listed on post #43 of this sticky thread: https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/pathophysiology-p-microbiology-145201.html - pathophysiology/ a & p/ microbiology/ fluid & electrolyte resources

Love that site! its so clear and specific and has alot of different heart rhythms and I love that it shows you what the rhythm looks like on a strip.

I used to volunteer on a telemetry unit before I started nursing school. Very busy at times. If you have some downtime, go over to the monitors in the nurses station and check out the heart rhythms. Have fun!
