I think cutsey scrub tops look ridiculous on adult units

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

The other day a co-worker strolled in wearing a scrub top festooned with furry, smiling teddy bears. On an adult cardiac floor...REALLY? On various adult units I've seen Looney Tunes, Precious Moments, rainbows and clouds, hearts, and yes...oodles and oodles of teddy bears.

I think these types of scrub tops look ridiculous unless you work in peds, in which case they would all be highly appropriate. On one hand nurses are striving to be taken seriously as professionals, yet with the other hand they are taking juvenile looking scrub tops off the hangar.

I'm a guy and pretty much have to wear solid scrubs if I don't want to look like a freak. But I am not motivated out of jealousy to kvetch about print tops on the ladies. If women want to pizazz up their uniforms, I have seen tons of very tasteful, very professional looking print scrub tops coordinated with solid pants.

If I were director of nursing of the world, I would ban dorky print scrub tops.

Okay...talk amongst yourselves.

. Anyone who says they don't question her competence and professionalism is LYING.

I'm going to say this once as this seems to apply to me only, so please don't take this the wrong way but I DON'T LIE!! Having spent my ENTIRE life being judged by my looks (racial) I can honestly say that I don't think a person in uncompetent or unprofessional because they are wearing teddy bears or winne the pooh. And I try really hard not to make judgement on them period until I meet them. Just because people do it doesn't mean you should.

and you can unequivocally state that you don't think a person incompetent or unprofessional when they look like a hooker that's had a rough, sleepless night?

seriously?

I don't get why it's such a bad thing to take in sensory cues and make inferences based on them. How do you know the person you are talking to is a woman? Well, she has a raised "bump" in the upper 1/3 of her torso--previous experience tells us this tends to be breasts. She does not have facial hair--previous experience associates this with women and youth. She has long/longer hair--previous experience tells us that generally this is seen on women. There is no overly prominent brow ridge--previous experience shows this to be a feminine trait. She is wearing a skirt--out culture tells us that only women wear skirts. Etc, etc, etc. You see where I'm going with this.

So, I can comfortably and rightly tell you that I will judge a person based on what I see. We as humans are meant to do it, we base all of our acts on seeing sensory cues and basing judgments on them. I know that when I dress sloppy and I haven't taken the time to do my hair/makeup or I have chipped nails I give off a sloppy, lazy, uninterested image. And it's true. That's why I avoid dressing and looking like that, I want people to know that I am orderly, I take care of myself, I care about myself. In turn, if I see a grown adult in cartoons, EVEN if it's neatly pressed, I will judge them and wonder why they would think it's appropriate.

What part of I DON'T JUDGE PEOPLE LEST I BE JUDGED is not getting through. I have been judged before, therfore I don't look and people and make judgements, I wait until I see them interact or they start talking. And if you read my post and the OP he wasn't referring to clothing that is too tight or showed too much skin, I specifically said scrubs with Charactors on them ie disney, teddy bears, rainbows ect. Maybe the rest of you can go about your life looking at people and making snap judgements about what kind of person they are based on how they look, I seriously don't. Becuase it starts with what they are wearing but that practice can and DOES become racial (as it is for me), gender, reliogious ect ect ect.

If you look at someone and determine their gender or sex before you have spoken to them, then you have made a judgment based on appearances, and one that may be incorrect.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you're human like the rest of us and you make judgments despite your protestations that you don't.

SORRY TO BURST YOURS BUT ACTUALLY I DON'T!!! Yes I might see a person across the room and think that is a woman when it could be a man is true, however I DO NOT say they are incompentent or unprofessional based on that!! People who do that run the risk of treating that person differently because that that judgement. Tell me what is the diffrence between that and discrimination? Yes I am human, BUT I DON'T JUDGE PEOPLE. Since people don't seem to understand what I am saying, I give up trying to explain, just know that a few people REFUSE TO JUDGE THEN TREAT PERSON DIFFERENTLY BASED ON APPEARANCE!!

That's what I was trying to say with my previous post!:)

I didn't say anything about making a judgment about their professionalism or lack there of, which obviously you made the erroneous JUDGMENT that I did. /Fail

You said you don't make any judgments about a person based on their appearance in a previous post, but in this post you just admitted that you did while stating that you don't. You need to take a step back, re-evaluate and get rid of this delusion you have.

If you're in a dark alley and a man dressed in black with a hood over his face suddenly appears and runs at you with an object that appears pointed and shiny. Do you stop and wait for them to reach you before you make a decision to either run or call for help? Do you wait for them to attack before you make a decision regarding their intent?

You make judgments based on appearance. You can delude yourself into thinking that you don't and yell at every person who proves you wrong, but you do. We all do. It's human nature. We wouldn't have survived as a species without this ability.

You may not make judgments about someone based on their ethnicity, but you make judgments and decisions about people based on their appearance.

fail to you because that is excatly what this thread has become...making judgments that clothing makes a person unprofessional

i don't have delusions, there is a difference making a judgement about a peson looks and calling them unprofessional and not liking what they wear or thinking you see a man when is a woman. re-read my post other peoples posts!

what does this have to do when calling a nurse incompentant because he/she chooses to wear angels or teddy bears on there tops?

I think I understood what you were saying pretty well. It's pretty plain.

I am glad you illustrated this point the way you did, because clearly most people would not think of running away from the same man, neatly quothed and pressed wearing a Hugo Boss suit in the same dark alley. Clothing in fact does create an impression of a person, whether we like to admit it or not.

eeyorelov: notice that the use of caps as you have in your post is frowned upon under the Terms of Service, it gives the impression of shouting. Even the use of red font color escalates the appearance of anger. I know this thread is getting you upset but please be more diplomatic in your replies.

I am curious to know, however: Would you go to a job interview dressed in your Disney/teddybear/rainbow scrubs because you strongly believe a potential employer will see your professionalism beyond what you wear? That makes no sense. Why do people wear what they wear to interviews? Because first impressions come only once.

Yeah. Caps are frowned on and red means she's p*ssed. But a bit of pile-on was occuring, too.
