bandage scissors

I am getting ready to start a new job with alot of bandage changes. I have a pair of scissors right now, but I swear they are so dull. I have tried to sharpen them, but it doesn't matter. So, my question is do I take my scissors to a professional to sharpen them or get a new pair? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

For those that use bandage scissors, do you clean them after every time you use them?

I do. I either wipe them down with alcohol swabs or use the germicidal wipes at work.

I wipe mine down with alcohol pads. I will let you know if my scissors are better now. I hate to part with mine too. I'm going to put some marking on them too. I have come close to have them walk. Thanks you for all the suggestions. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. :)

Take a piece of aluminum foil, fold it several times, and then cut it up with your scissors. It will sharpen them.

I use my own scissors at work, also. I never know when I will need them. When I stop to "wash" my hands with the alcohol cleaner, I wash the scissors at the same time.

I have several pairs-I have one favorite gold pair and one extra in my locker. I was always told that a good OR nurse always has scissors on him/her so since day one, I keep them on me.;)

I like trauma shears personally (got mine from Big Lots/Odd Lots for less than $1 per pair and were called utlility shears). Work great for me, and the size is perfect. Bandage scissors I got for school were too heavy and always seemed to clank in my pockets (i wear cargo pants), but the 5.5" shears were too small, however they do work great.

I still have my two original pair issued to me when I was a medic in the USAF... 35 years ago ! :rotfl:

Still sharp as ever.. never have had them sharpened yet. The larger as well as the smaller pair. I keep the short pair in my pocket at all times.

Love, love, love my scissors, and since I work in HH I don't have to worry about them growing legs and finding a new home in some other nurse's pocket. :D

Just as an FYI, I have a pair of scissors that have serrated edges, so they cut lots of stuff, and you can put them in the autoclave, which I do at the end of every shift. I think Prestige makes them.
