No Hospital Experience

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello,

I need advice on finishing up my resume. I have worked for a well known bank for going on 5 years now. My current position is in a escalations group de-escalating calls as they come in. I have been a "stand in" team lead for the past 2-3 years but never officially accepted the job since I was currently full time in nursing school.

My resume has a ton of leadership, problem solving, and communication skills mentioned however no where will you find hospital experience. I have tried to take out things that I feel do not translate to nursing as well as highlight skills such as time management that are very transferable.

I am nervous because I did have an interview as a tech a while back and in the interview the nurse manager stated "I looked over your resume, the only thing is you don't have any hospital experience."

I graduate in December and soon applications for internships will open. Any advice on how I can make my resume "pop" or stand out without hospital/tech experience?

Thank you!

You can use your school clinical experience in your resume. In fact most employers want to see it on resumes.

If you have some free time, get your certifications. ACLS, PALS, NIH stroke scale, possible critical care courses (if you plan on going into critical care in the future), and a dysrhythmia certification course. Even a triage course may look good as well. 5. You can also choose to take these courses AFTER graduation so that is shows you are still active and eager as most of my classmates have done. One of my classmates and my close friend recently got hired for a new grad ICU position and she had 0 hospital experience. She had all the above mentioned and she is an active member of the American Red Cross (which I gave her major points according to my friend during the interview). While on break/free time, I would highly suggest volunteering at a hospital or clinical (or working) or maybe joining an organization similar to the American Red Cross. Not only that, but your networking capabilities will further with organizations.

Specializes in Adult Psychiatric.

Like you stated, highlight your transferable skills. I was hired in a hospital as a brand new ADN grad. It is possible despite what a lot of people will lead you to believe.

Thank you! I appreciate all of your assistance!
