When it comes to working as a perioperative nurse in a multidisciplinary surgical team, strong communication skills, solid critical thinking skills and attention to details are key cornerstones to providing competent patient care in the surgical suite. As I demonstrate below, I believe my competencies in these three areas make me an excellent candidate for this position.

Working as a front line healthcare member in a rural facility, I acted as the liaison between the patient and the healthcare team. To perform this role effectively, I developed the ability to communicate in an efficient manner. I tailor my communication as appropriate to the audience I am speaking with; this is done to ensure my messages are relayed in an easy to understand, clear, and concise manner. Many errors in healthcare occur due to miscommunications; I hope to do my part in improving health outcome of perioperative patients by offering my strong communication skills.

As there is always an element of unpredictability and surprise when working in a rural facility, I have experience in working efficiently in a rapid environment. Using my assessment skills as the basis of my findings, I am able to critically process the information I gather to provide individualized patient care. In conjunction, I have experience in stabilizing patient in critical conditions prior to transfers to urban facilities, another area where my critical thinking skills are of utmost importance. As patients' medical statuses fluctuate throughout the perioperative timeframe, the ability to critical think and intervene as needed is vital. I believe my critical thinking skills and my flexibility to work in an ever changing environment will serve to promote health quality for patients.

Lastly, attention to details is a must in a perioperative setting. Everything from the set-up of the room to handling of instruments must be handled meticulously; breaches in the sterile field or mishandling of instruments can result in patient harm. I pay careful attention to details when providing patient care, to ensure all of the patient's needs are met. Should I find some needs aren't met, I advocate for the patient, promoting the patient's health on the journey of recovery. By offering my attention to details to the position, I can be an advocate for patients during the surgery, safeguarding the patient against potential harm, which in turn, will certainly improve their quality of life post-surgery.
