Medical Drugs in the US & else where. Are they the same ?.

Hie there, friends & relatives.

I just wanted to find out if the drug books, and drugs used in the US are the same as in Europe. Does one need a different drug book ?.

Many drugs have different brand names.

My Davis drug guide lists US and Canadian drugs/names. Haven't seen any other countries/ languages, though.

There are several differences. In the US we have acetaminophen. In the UK it is paracetamol

I remember having a patient from Iceland once who came with a medication called "orfiril retard"... in the US we call this "Extended Release Depakote". It also came in different dosages than we have here. Like it came in 300 mg tabs and in the US, Depakote is available in 125 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg tablets.

doses can vary as well, in the UK & Ireland prophylatic asprin is 75mg where in Australia and New Zealand it is 100mg. Some combination meds are not approved in other countries.......Augmentin IV 1.2g was one of the most common IV antibiotics that I used in Ireland on a colorectal ward in Ireland. In Australia it is not approved.

brand names are different as well
