word of encouragement for EC students/future RNs

i've heard in the past some "traditional" MSN programs will not accept RN's from EC (i have graduated from EC in april '08) and people were being looked down on and their applications rejected. Well, i have just been accepted in a RN-MSN FNP program by a local university and before the interview even started, one of the faculty members told me she knew how hard EC was, how much work, self-determination, focus it takes to be able to complete it...she was very impressed with EC! Her words were music to my ears, it was so nice to see she was so open-minded...:yeah:

so, if you happen to be dismissed by anybody because you did not go through a traditional nursing program, don't get upset, discouraged, angry...keep knocking on doors and one will open for you...

Yeah- you hear these rumors from people who haven't actually done the program. Most EC grads I know (including myself) have had no problems whatsoever in getting accepted into advanced programs. Congrats to you, BTW!

There are still alot of people out there who have a hard time understanding, not to mention accepting EC. The advice I can give is dont let people out there undermine what you have worked hard for so long. When I was interviewing for my Masters program, I obsessed about how I would answer those inevitable Excelsior College questions. Those questions never came and I got a slot in school that many people wanted. There is definite value in an EC degree. If a person understands how difficult it can be and the self motivation it takes, then they get an accurate measure of that person. If you happen to run across someone who sees it as a disadvantage, move on. There are plenty of people out there that know what it took to get that degree. Dont ever see yourself as anything other than competitive. I am almost done and it all started with that "mail order" degree.

I am happy to report that I just inquired to the University of Iowa (local college for me) about an EC student being accepted in the RN-BSN program. The contact I had at the college informed me that they have accepted students from EC (currently do as well!) and that it is "certainly an accredited program." However, I am much further along in my studies for the BS in Health Sciences at EC. With no enrollment fee for this degree and only 27 credits left in it with classes in health science writing and informatics that interest me greatly, it looks really, really good to me.

We have lots and lots of options as EC nurses. :yeah:
