Thinking of switching to U of P

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi- I've been mulling over getting my BSN through University of Phoenix, and then their MSN. I'm currently finishing up my ASN at Excelsior (2 general eds to do). Can any current/past U of P students advise me on the realities of this program? I'm comfortable with distance learning, so no problem there...what I want to know from the horse's mouth is: 1.) How many papers per course are you required to write, 2.) Is it possible for me to be able to do some general eds at Excelsior while I'm taking nursing core courses at U of P, or would that be overload? 3.) How much out of pocket can I expect to spend? I want to do this program because it's Title IV (EC isn't), and while it's more expensive per credit hour, I'm hoping loans, etc. will cover the bulk of the cost. 4.) If you could change 1 thing about the program, what would it be? 5.) For any of you in their MSN program- do you find it's a good program for those who want to be nurse educators?

Thanks for any info you can give me on this. I talked to an advisor today, but I don't want to apply until I hear from other students who can give me the lowdown on these programs. Have a great day!

About RN to BSN to MSN, have you thought about SUNY Stony Brook? They have a nontrad NP program (counts as a masters, at least in Texas) and they accept the Excelsior ADN as sufficient academic prerequisites.

And they cannot possibly be as pricey as U of Phoenix.....

Thanks for the link, guys!

Chris- I don't want to be a NP...If I get my MSN, I want to be an educator- I love working with nursing students. The thing with that is if I want to teach, I want a MSN program that has a concentration in Adult Education. UOP offers that- I've been hard pressed to find a distance MSN program that isn't concentrated in mgmnt or informatics. And really, if I were going to do a NP program, I would need lots of community health or OB clinical education, as I have limited experience in those areas. I looked at SUNY, but they're expensive, too- for out of state students.

Are you doing this program? Is it done through arranged preceptorships, or do you have to travel to new york for clinical rotations? I hope to be finishing my ADN with excelsior this fall, and would like to start progressing in the general direction of FNP as quickly as possible.

You have already completed most of your clinical hours when you received your 2 year degree. The clinicals that are required can be done at the facility where you are working. At least this is what everyone did that I know who went thru their program.

Actually I do kind of look like that. I just have to get me a couple 80's rock t-shirts and a haircut and I will look exactly like Beavis.

Thank you for bringing out the truth, lgflamini. Now everyone knows how hot I am.

Since we're being all gigglie here, I have a question for you. Another frequent poster and I were PMing and trying to decipher your screen name. She (being more logical than I) thought it was your name, and I thought it meant you drive a large minivan and you live in Florida.

Can you shed some light for us? Thank you!

OMG, that's hilarious! It's my name...although I do drive a minivan, and I wish I lived in FL...lol. When I originally signed up here at Allnurses, I tried to come up with something snazzy, but I couldn't get anything to take. Somehow, my name ended up being my entire email addy, and I had to get Brian to at least shorten it.

Funny thing is, I got married last July, and my last name changed, but everyone at work still calls me "Flamini." I don't even get called by my first name (which isn't "Large," BTW)...lol.
