Pre-req's FOR pre-req's???

Nursing Students Online Learning

I need to get my pre-req's done so that I can apply for an adn program next year. Every CC I've looked at (Including online, mgccc, edukan etc) require pre-requisites before I can even take the classes that I need! I didn't have to take a general Biology for my Bach. in elementary education, and according to their websites it's required to take A & P. Gen. Chemistry is required before I can take Chem. lab, so on and so forth. Does anyone know if colleges require you to stick to the pre-req requirements if you're not matriculated? I'm just looking to take a few courses. Dang weekends, I wish I could just call!

I have a GED, that is why I can't provide H.S. transcripts of Chemistry, Algebra or Bio. Looking at my GPA now you'd never believe my grades were so terrible in H.S. but yeah... I got my GED in the last month of my senior year to save myself the embarrassment of ever having to furnish my High School transcripts.

I wish I could kick the younger me right about now.

Unfortunately, there are pre-reqs for some pre-reqs and that is why a ADN Program can actually take 3or 4 years depending on what type of load you take. All most all schools require general bio before A&P, and the same goes for chem and other classes. It sux but I had to start from scratch and I made it- I start Nursing school it august.... I also know about regrets of our younger selves- teens can be stupid. No one thought I would go back to school and stick with it, but I've taken almost 60 credits keeping a 3.7 gpa, working full time, with 3 young kids.

Like life school is not easy-but it is very doable! Just stick with it and good luck!

I suggest calling local high schools and seeing if they have adult classes at night. I needed chem. as a prereq. and I called a local HS and it was like 100 dollors for 8 weeks and this gave me HS level chem(they even sent transcripts to the nursing schools). It was so easy and actually kinda fun. Everyone that was taking it were students from colleges looking to get into nursing school. I found out about this from a nursing school when I called to check what prereqs. they required. So I say call nursing schools and see how they can help you.

Big K, that sounds like a great idea if you are young enough. I dont think you can take adult ed if you are over 21 where I live. I wish that I could take high school again, when I was younger I was smart enough to do it but was so stupid and made dumb mistakes. I had to change high schools 3 times because we kept moving and it really screwed me up. I spent more time worrying about making friends and dont react to stress well so I wasnt thinking straight. Never went to college and wasnt worried about it because I was getting my MRS. I thought my husband would support me the rest of my life and 2 marraiges and 4 kids later I'm not too happy about the way that part of my life turned out.

MI Mom, I'm near you and curious how did you start over again? I am going to be taking pre-reqs that make my daughter laugh. I'm not stupid but its been 18 years since I stepped foot in a classroom and have forgotton how to do a lot of math. I have figured it out and am hoping its possible to work my way up from the bottom. I'm just afraid that I cant do it. Any Advice?

Every ADN and BSN program I have every seen requires General Biology as a prerequisite. If they don't, they expect that you will take it. General Biology is totally necessary for A&P, Micro, and really helps with nutrition.

As for Chemistry, the CHM lab should be taken concurrently with the lecture class. Check on that.

If you feel that you really know your stuff for Biology, you could always CLEP out of the these classes. Here is a link to more info about that: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/ex_bio.html

MaineRN2B,

Hello! I have been skimming your posts and let me offer you some encouragement and advice. First of all, I just finished the ADN program at Southwestern Illinois College. In filing paperwork to prepare for 'boards' (the NCLEX), there was a disclaimer that the State of Illinois does not recognize a diploma from Excelsior -- so, that may help you with any thoughts about enrolling in their program, as I imagine other states may also be inclined to not recognize their program. As the saying goes, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Secondly, where are you in Japan? My husband and I are moving to Yokota in about 6 weeks and are terribly excited!! It may put off my nursing career for a few years, but there will always be a job waiting for me when we get back, I say! If you are at Yokota, would love the opportunity to meet up and answer any questions you may have.

Finally, as others have replied, Anatomy I and II, a general chemistry, nutrition, into to medical terminology, and either sociology or psychology are pretty standard prerequisites to just about every nursing program out there, where the Anatomy(s) and the chemistry must have a lab component. I know many people said Microbiology, but that was not a prereq in my program. Anyway, I'm open to any questions.

Specializes in ICU. Med/Surg: Ortho, Neuro, & Cardiac.

At the CC I'm attending right now, Gen Psychology must be taken before Human Growth and Development. I simply asked for the approval of the department director and I am taking both of these classes at the same time next semester.

Maybe you can do something like this? Just be VERY CAREFUL. For instance, I wouldn't try to take A&P II before A&P I. etc.
