On-line Microbiology Course in NC?

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

I have found a few on-line Microbiology courses offered in the western states during the Summer session. The tuition for a 4 hour course was $1500 + book and lab kit. I live in North Carolina and would like to stay away from the high tuition costs offered out of state. Are there any Microbiology courses with lab offered on-line in North Carolina or anywhere else for a lower rate?

Edukan offers Micro online, but you do have to locate a local lab facility that will allow you to do two hands-on lab experiments there.

Colorado Community Colleges also has online Micro and you have to order a lab kit to do the experiments on your own at home.

Both college charge the same rate whether you are in or out of state...Edukan is currently $115/unit. I don't know what CCC's rate is exactly but have heard it is somewhere around $200/unit.

If you haven't already done so, you might want to check just to be certain that online science courses will be accepted by your program...some schools won't allow students to transfer in credits for online science labs.

Where are you in NC? It's always nice to meet another NC person here.

Good Luck!

I just registered with ccconline.com... tuition + lab kit + text + microscope has run me $1100 But this now allows me to do everythign at home. Its hard to find really good at-home science classes with labs.

ccconline micro starts 6/5 if youre interested for this upcoming summer semester.

Wow, that's pricey with CCC! Well, I don't know if you have to buy a lab kit with Edukan since it's required to go to a facility for the labs. That might drive the price up a lot if there are a lot of supplies to purchase and/or if the lab charges a usage fee. Books may be cheaper if they can be found used through Amazon or Half.com, but it sounds it like the total cost could be in the same price range no matter where the course is taken. Geesh, it's all so expensive! :uhoh3:

Hi Candace,

I live in Garner not too far from Raleigh. Are you close by?

Lynn

Thanks for all the replies. I checked again with ccconline and the course does not cost as much as I thought. I am in the process of getting registered now. I hope I can endure the class. I have never taken an accelerated Science class on-line. Wish me luck!!

Hi Lynn,

Not too far away, we're in Southwest Durham. I hear Garner is nice, not to mention growing!

Accelerated online science courses are tough but doable. I just finished up an 8 week AP1 course through Edukan in the Spring and will start the 6 week AP2 course at the end of June. I'd love to know how you like the Micro class at CCC, I may take that class from them, would prefer to not have to hunt down a facility for the labs.

Where and when are you applying to nursing school? Or are you already in?

Best of luck to you, and please stay in touch! :)

Hello- I don't mean to interrupt your conversation but I am having a tough time figuring out how to work this- first time on this forum.

Noticed you were both from NC, I just was contacted by Pitt County Memorial, can either of you tell me anything about Greenville, or Pitt County Memorial?

Also Micro was so much fun you will love it. I took A&P II on line because it was so much easier with my schedule and cheaper.

Thanks,

Gina

Hi Gina,

Welcome to the forum! Sorry, I won't be able to help you out with your questions because I am new to NC (less than a year), but I did see some old threads on the North Carolina Nurses forum about Pitt and Greenville...the general consensus seemed to be that Pitt is a good hospital and the area is nice. You might try posting your question on the NC Nurses forum to see if anyone responds with some more current information, the threads I saw were about 5-6 months old.

Thanks for your input on Micro, I'm actually looking forward to taking the class somewhere down the line!

I did not know you could do Micor on line. My class was 80% lab. I can not imagine doing at home what we did in lab at school. But then again, I did Chemistry on line. Good luck!
